A team of city officials, police and advocates for the homeless swept into a makeshift encampment under a ramp to the Whitestone Expressway, relocating those taking shelter there to safer quarters and fencing off the barren lot.

The fenced off area is under the Whitestone Expressway on the border between College Point and Flushing and is popular among the homeless seeking shelter, according to Councilman Paul Vallone’s office. Police have known about the area and periodically evacuate it. Despite the fence, the homeless kept returning. But Vallone is hoping that the area will be rid of shelter seekers now that the Department of Homeless Services and Common Ground, a nonprofit organization, helped relocate the people who called the Whitestone Expressway their home.

“This combined effort by our city’s Agencies was effective in cleaning up and relocating the homeless encampment in College Point,” Vallone said. “Particularly, I applaud the DHS and Common Ground for going above and beyond to work with the chronically homeless to encourage them to relocate and seek out shelter and housing as we work to try and ensure that no one has to live outside on the streets.”

Vallone’s office estimated that there were around 30-50 people using the underpass as a shelter. Neither the city nor Common Ground returned a request for comment.

A new five-story hotel with nearly 40 units is moving into the north Flushing area with plans to be completed next year.

Construction workers recently demolished the two-story family home that was on 31-06 Linden Place, and are currently working on the hotel with an anticipated spring 2015 target date.

The hotel will not have any commercial space and there will not be a parking lot on site, Department of Building records show.

The lodging is located close to a mall anchored by Pathmark, and across the nearby Whitestone Expressway there is a center with a movie theatre and Toys “R” Us.

Owners of the hotel didn’t return calls for comment.

Motorists traveling on the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge can expect long-term exit closures next month.

The 3rd Avenue exit — the last exit in Queens before entering the Bronx-bound bridge — will be closed to all traffic beginning January 7, while construction work on the $109 million capital improvement project to widen the Queens approach is done, according to the MTA.

The blockades are expected to remain in place for approximately two years, officials said.

Passenger vehicles driving from the Bronx-bound Cross Island Parkway will have to take Exit 33N at Utopia Parkway, and those driving from the northbound Whitestone Expressway will have to get off past the 20th Avenue exit and merge onto the Cross Island Parkway.

All commercial vehicles must exit the Whitestone Expressway at 20th Avenue, the MTA said.

The agency said signs will be in place and traffic agents will be on hand when the detours begin next month.
