PSAL playoffs heat up

The Benjamin Cardozo Judges (16-3) lost to the Wings Academy Wings (18-1) by a score of 54-46 in the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) ‘A’ Division, “AA.” Senior Ryan Yearwood led the Judges with a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Kyle Credle was second on the team with 10 points, to go along with three rebounds. Senior Edwin Sainvil scored eight points while pulling down four rebounds while senior Tajay Henry scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Long Island City Bull Dogs (18-1) beat the Brooklyn High School for Law And Technology Jets (13-7) by a score of 63-51 in the second round of the Basketball Boys Varsity, 2012 ‘A’ Division Playoff Bracket. Senior Xavier Jones led the Bull Dogs with 20 points while dishing out four assists. Senior Sadi Camara scored 15 points of his own with a total of three assists. Senior Arthur Santanna had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Kevin Green Jr. filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. The Bull Dogs will play the CSIHS/McCown Dragons in the next round.

The Springfield Gardens Golden Eagles (14-3) beat the Dewitt Clinton Governors (14-8) by a score of 63-48. Senior Gregory Williamson led all scorers with 26 points leading the Golden Eagles to victory. Sophomore Dupree McBrayer scored 15 points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out six assists. Senior Eghosa Osagie chipped in with nine points of his own. For the Governors, freshman Donahue Smith had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

In the PSAL ‘B’ League playoffs the Newcomers Lions (16-0) beat the Metropolitan High School Golden Eagles (14-6) by a score of 82-73. For the Lions, sophomore Larry Baez scored 31 points. Senior Sergino Emmanuel who only averaged 4.93 points during the regular season, scored 20 points. Junior Cristian Zapata had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while dishing out eight assists. Senior Giovanni Pissioni scored nine points, had 10 rebounds and seven assists. Junior Jose Fernandez scored just one point, but was tied for the lead in rebounds with 14 boards.

The Springfield Gardens Golden Eagles (11-2) beat the Franklin K. Lane Knights (4-9) by a score of 52-46. For the Knights, senior Kalil Johnson led the team with 16 points. Three Knights’ players scores eight points and junior Eugene Thwaites Jr. almost achieved a triple-double with eight points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Senior Gaoussou Sissoko scored eight points while grabbing seven rebounds, while freshman Natanael Carrasco scored eight points as well. While senior Denzel Morgan scored just four points, he was able to grab 10 rebounds. The Golden Eagles will round out the regular season against the Hilcrest Hawks (3-10).

The Hawks lost their last game to the High School for Construction Red Hawks (10-3) by a score of 69-48. For the Red Hawks, senior Rudranauth Sewsankar led the team with 22 points. Senior Ehiavekhan Eromoselle had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Kareem Stowe fell two rebounds shy of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Junior Alexis Rincon chipped in with nine points while senior O’Shane Beckford was only able to score three points while dishing out seven assists.

The John Adams Spartans (10-3) beat the Grover Cleveland Tigers (4-9) by a score of 80-38. Junior Markell French led the Spartans with a triple-double, scoring 19 points while pulling down 12 rebounds and dishing out 13 assists. Senior Shane Hubbard is proving he can play more than one sport as the football star scored 13 points while grabbing three rebounds. Junior Shmael Nausrudeen was third on the team with 12 points. Junior Justin Cotto scored 10 points while pulling down eight rebounds. Junior Ahmed Kone scored seven points while grabbing nine rebounds. The Spartans will end the season on the road against the Richmond Hill Lions (3-10).

In their last game, the Lions lost to the Far Rockaway Sea Horses (7-6) by a score of 70-43. Junior Tyrelle Gordon led the Sea Horses with 18 points and senior Warren Saylor Jr. was a close second with 17 points. Senior Jarren Oliver-Moore pitched in with 11 points. Junior Shaleek Saunders scored eight points while Junior Malik Stewart scored five points and had a team leading 11 rebounds. The Sea Horses will finish the season against the Tigers.

The Bayside Commodores (7-1) lost their first game of the season to the Beach Channel Dolphins (5-3) by a score of 36-20. The Commodores had 272 total offensive yards, with all but three yards coming on the ground. Senior Timothy Capers rushed for 128 yards on 15 attempts and a touchdown. Senior Richard Vaughan rushed for 110 yards on nine attempts and two touchdowns. The Dolphins had a total of 412 yards all on the ground. Sophomore Diequan Underwood was the offensive star of the game, rushing for 314 yards on 19 attempts and four touchdowns. Junior Breland Archbold rushed for 80 yards on 12 attempts while scoring a touchdown. Next up for the Commodores will be the August Martin Falcons (5-3). The Dolphins will face the Springfield Gardens Golden Eagles (2-6).
The Golden Eagles won their last game by a score of 28-0 over the Long Island City Bulldogs (2-6). The Golden Eagles had a total of 226 total offensive yards, all of which came on the ground. Senior Kendell Daniel led all Golden Eagles’ rushers with 96 yards on 14 attempts. Senior Jahkeem Heyward had 47 yards on three attempts with a touchdown. Senior Shaquille Charles had a 15 yard touchdown run, while sophomore Christopher Turnage and senior Justin Martin had 21 and 28 yards respectively. On defense, Turnage had an interception and sophomore Nnamdi Uchendu recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown. Next up for the Bulldogs will be Jamaica.
The John Adams Spartans (4-4) loss to the Campus Magnet Bull-Dogs (6-2) by a score of 14-6. The Bull-Dogs had a total of 141 offensive yards in the come-from-behind victory, scoring 14 unanswered points. Kahlik Greenwood only completed one out of three passes, but that one completion was good for a 40 yard touchdown pass. Senior Kareem Turnage led the Bull-Dogs with 55 rushing yards on 11 attempts. Turnage was the defensive star of the game with 12 tackles, a sack, a touchdown and a safety. Next up for the Spartans will be the Flushing Red Devils (4-4).
The Red Devils lost their last game by a score of 28-26 to the Port Richmond Red Raiders. The Red Devils only had 90 offensive yards. Senior Jason Gonzalez completed one out of two passes for a 40 yard touchdown pass. Senior Andrew King had a 50 yard touchdown run. The Red Raiders had a total of 401 offensive yards. Junior Michael Goffredo threw for 85 yards on five out of seven completions. In addition to the 85 passing yards, Goffredo rushed for 74 yards on 12 attempts and a touchdown. Junior Aaron Yates rushed for 85 yards on five attempts and a touchdown. Yates also added a touchdown on an 80 yard kick return. Junior Shaquan Gordon rushed for 82 yards on 11 attempts and a touchdown.
