Big-hearted first graders in one Flushing elementary school fed their minds while feeding the needy.

During a lesson on selflessness and the importance of generosity, two first grade classes at P.S. 21 made and donated 500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to the Interfaith Nutrition Network’s (INN) soup kitchen for the homeless, located in Hempstead, Long Island.

Emily Wilensky, the INN’s communications director, came to the school to speak to the students about homelessness. By learning that anybody among them could be in need — whether apparent or not — the students, school officials said, were able to “develop empathy towards others and gain an appreciation for all that they have.”
