Burlington Coat Factory to open in Jamaica

Burlington Coat Factory is coming to Jamaica, and it’s going to be huge.

The national clothing retail chain will be opening a store in a 150,000-square-foot planned retail complex located on Jamaica Avenue between Union Hall and 160th streets, according to published reports.

The store will take up 70,000 square feet and will spread across all three buildings, including parts of the second, third and fourth floors.

According to DNAinfo, the buildings in question include the former headquarters of the Jamaica Savings Bank, which was located in a landmarked Beaux-Arts building; another historic building constructed in 1927; and a building that has been vacant for several years.

The store, which is set to open in the spring of 2017, will join Burlington’s two current Queens locations in Rego Park and Glen Oaks.

New retail opportunities are coming to Rego Park just blocks from three major Queens malls.

Leasing has begun on 8,095 square feet of ground retail space at 92-77 Queens Blvd., which is currently under construction, Winick Realty Group announced. The site is expected to be move-in ready by 2015.

“We truly believe that this is an unparalleled opportunity for any retailer to position themselves in front of three major malls, Queens Boulevard, the Long Island Expressway, two subway lines and 10 bus lines,” said Winick Realty Group real estate broker Robert Heicklen.

Located adjacent to Rego Center and blocks away from Queens Center and Queens Place malls, 92-77 offers retailers 35 feet of all-glass frontage on 93rd Street and front- and rear-facing backlit signage.

Deals including one for a 16,000-square foot fitness center and another for a “well-known national coffee brand” are pending for two of the three spaces on the property, according to Winick Realty Group. The overall site features a 400-square-foot loading dock and on-site parking.

According to a Winick Realty Group online flyer, Retro Fitness and Starbucks are expected soon.

“Winick Realty Group is excited to represent this type of high-profile, high-visibility exclusive as we continue to expand our leasing efforts in the borough of Queens,” said Winick Realty Group President Steven Baker.



First Queens Denny’s opening in Jackson Heights

Jackson Heights will soon be home to the third Denny’s Restaurant in New York City and the first in Queens.

The chain restaurant will be a co-tenant, along with Red Mango, Dunkin’ Donuts, Children of America Day Care and medical offices, at a brand new commercial building coming to 87-10 Northern Blvd., according to commercial real estate management company First Class Management.

The 40,000-square-foot building will have underground parking, with about 5,000 square feet of retail space available for lease on the ground floor and 10,000 square feet of office space available on the second floor, according to the company’s website.

Councilman Daniel Dromm, who confirmed the chain restaurant will open its doors in Jackson Heights, said he is concerned about Denny’s coming into the community because it is allegedly known for paying its employees minimum wage.

“I hope that when they do come that they would pay fair wages to the workers,” said Dromm, who has supported a resolution calling for New York City to raise the minimum wage. “They should be paying [workers] a wage they can live off of, that they can survive on.”

Denny’s is expected to open its first chain in New York City in downtown Manhattan later this summer, after settling a lawsuit with residents who opposed the restaurant claiming it would became a hangout spot for college students, according to published reports. The chain is also reportedly slated to open a location in Brooklyn.

Denny’s did not respond to request for comment.



New supermarket, retail coming to LIC

Long Island City retail is on the rise.

Winick Realty Group announced 12,919 square feet of retail space at the newly-built Gantry Park Landing luxury residential building has been fully leased. The space will be home to three new tenants expected to open in the fall. 

“Long Island City has truly emerged as a home for young families and the three new tenants we have brought to the building will go a long way to meet the demands of this currently underserved market,” said Winick Realty Group broker Hal Shapiro.

The largest tenant, which will occupy 7,590 square feet, is Urban Market. The full-service market provides gourmet cheese, fresh meat and seafood, prepared foods, and more. 

The second retail tenant, Beans, Grapes and Leaves, will use 1,059 square feet to offer upscale coffee, tea and wine. 

North Shore-LIJ Health System, the final tenant, will build a new 4,270-square-foot urgent care concept to the building.



Thousands flock to first annual Bayside Retail Expo

Bayside businesses became reacquainted with the local community on Sunday, October 9, during the first annual Bayside Village Retail Expo.

“Nothing’s happened here in so long. Nobody actually expected this to happen,” said Gregg Sullivan, executive director of the Bayside Village Business Improvement District. “This is the start of something really good that’s going to just get bigger and better.”

The main goal of the expo was to reawaken the wide diversity of Bayside businesses and remake the area into a central destination again, Sullivan said. Although no items were for sale, businesses were able to showcase and promote their goods from 12 to 8 p.m.

Close to 40 retailers lined 41st Avenue near Bell Boulevard. The expo drew in more than 2,000 pedestrians throughout the day, with live music from local musicians on both ends of the avenue.

“For the first time in 17 years, we have a music festival going on like this. Today is all about Bayside’s commerce. These are the actual people who make up Bayside,” Sullivan said.

Bayside resident Ann Vivona said she was on her way to brunch when she heard music and saw the fair.

“This is the place to be,” she said. “I think it’s about time there was a [retail] street fair because everybody knows about the night life, but what about everything else?”
