Cops save two teen girls, man in waters off Far Rockaway

Four NYPD officers rescued two drowning teenage girls and a man who went into the water to try and save them off of Far Rockaway Tuesday night, police said.

The cops, Sergeant Darryl Knight, Officer Terrence Sloan, Officer Maurice Roper and Officer Michael McCarthy, arrived at the scene near Beach 17th Street around 6:30 p.m. after responding to a 911 call.

The two girls, ages 14 and 15, had been swept out by the current. A 33-year-old man who had gone into the water when he saw the teens were in trouble had also gotten swept away by the current and all three were having trouble staying above the water, authorities said.

All four officers entered the water and were able to pull the girls, who were 50 feet out, and the man, who was 30 feet out, to safety.

The two girls were taken to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where they were checked out and released, according to police.

The man who was rescued refused medical aid at the scene.




Men rescued after jumping into East River in Long Island City

Three men ended up in the East River off of Long Island City Monday night after one of the men jumped into the water to try and save the other two, police said.

On a challenge the pair leaped into the East River, but one of the men apparently didn’t know how to swim and both struggled in the water, according to published reports,

A good Samaritan passing by the area near 48th Avenue at about 8 p.m., went in to rescue the 21-year-old and 22-year-old, cops said. All three were then pulled to safety by police.

The good Samaritan refused medical attention at the scene.

The two other men were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in stable condition.
