MTA will boost service on 7, L and M lines later this year

With overall subway ridership up 2.6 percent across the city, the MTA is set to meet the increased demand by boosting service on three local subway lines this December.

Most of the changes will take place during off-peak hours, as the MTA reported ridership between or after rush hour periods reached its highest rate in 65 years in 2014, with more than 1.75 billion riders systemwide.

The biggest boost will take place on the L line, with seven additional round trips added between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays. Ridership on the L line — which services Ridgewood and Bushwick — grew 4.7 percent last year, the largest increase of any line in the system.

According to the MTA, the seven additional trains will reduce wait times on the L line to five minutes between the morning and evening rush hours. Last fall, the MTA similarly enhanced L train service during weeknight and weekend periods.

The MTA will also introduce two additional round trips on the 7 line — which services the rapidly-growing neighborhoods of Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside and Flushing — between 8 and 10:20 p.m. on weeknights. The agency said this will reduce wait times to under 4 1/2 minutes.

This service increase is expected to ease commuting, in particular, out of the Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue station in Long Island City, which experienced a 12 percent growth in weekday ridership in 2014; and at the Flushing-Main Street terminal, which averages about 60,000 riders each day.

Finally, the M line will get an extra round trip just after the morning rush hour, between 9 and 9:30 a.m., reducing wait times to an average of 7 1/2 minutes. Since the line was rerouted in 2010 through Midtown Manhattan and northwest Queens (replacing the defunct V line), M train ridership is up about 31 percent, with an average increase of 6.2 percent at stations between Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village and Marcy Avenue in Williamsburg.

“New York is a dynamic city and it continues to grow as new or better housing options become available and more people come here for jobs or school,” said MTA New York City Transit President Carmen Bianco. “By making these schedule changes, New York City Transit is making the most of its resources to deliver service that accurately reflects ridership in growing areas.”

The MTA plans to spend $1.6 million to implement the additional service.

Irregularly shaped Ridgewood block with development potential for sale

That’s one tasty looking block for investors.

A pizza-slice-shaped block in Ridgewood with two one-story buildings is being marketed for about $5 million as the real estate market in the neighborhood continues to boom, following recent big transactions and plans to construct large developments.

The small block is a triangle formed at the intersection of Fresh Pond Road and Cypress Hills Street, with 70th Avenue to the south. Currently, the approximately 6,733-square-foot lot holds a laundromat and a café.

What may be particularly attractive to investors is that the property has a residential zoning and an extra 7,366 square feet of additional air rights, and can go up to a maximum height of 50 feet, or about five stories.

The price breaks down to nearly $360 per buildable square foot for the property, which is much higher than the average of about $220 in Ridgewood, according to broker John Gonsalves of Greiner Maltz Investment Properties. However, the property has already received many offers as that price is still relatively low compared to other parts of the city.

“We have received several full-priced offers. I thought it was a little rich for the market but apparently the market thought otherwise,” Gonsalves said. “There is definitely a lot of interest from Brooklyn and Manhattan investors. They see Ridgewood as a steal.”

Another reason for the $5 million price tag is that the buildings are already fully leased with retail tenants, and those properties tend to trade at higher prices, Gonsalves said.

He added that one interested real estate investor is a developer who has had projects in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and sees the opportunity with this property to collect rent from the retail tenants for a few years before developing it when values in the neighborhood increase.

The laundromat, which has a three-year lease, and the café combine to give possible owners a net income of more than $200,000 annually.

The building is a few blocks away from the Fresh Pond Road M train subway station to the north, and not far from the Myrtle Avenue commercial strip to the south, making it attractive for possible future residents.

‘Commuter Composting’ coming to Ridgewood and Kew Gardens

Queens residents will soon have “Commuter Composting” in order to properly dispose of their household food waste, according to the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

The DSNY is expanding its curbside organic waste recycling program and also adding 11 new food scrap drop-off locations. Residents will also see 19 more seasonal sites this summer, for a total of 64 sites throughout the city. The drop-off program offers composting opportunities for New Yorkers in neighborhoods or buildings that do not receive curbside collection of organic waste.

The “Commuter Composting” program will be offered in Ridgewood outside the Fresh Pond Road M train station, located on Fresh Pond Road near Putnam Avenue, on Wednesdays from 8 to 10 a.m.; and in Kew Gardens outside the Union Turnpike E/F train station, on Kew Gardens Road between 80th and 81st avenues, on Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

The collected compost will be distributed to local greening groups such as urban farmers, community gardeners and street tree stewards to improve the quality of the soil.

Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia said the program will help redirect organic material from ending up in landfills.  Last week, the DSNY announced it would expand its household organics collection program in Maspeth, Middle Village and other areas of the city.

“Organic material makes up about a third of our city’s trash,” Garcia said. “We are excited to be able to provide more opportunities for New Yorkers to recycle their food waste. By increasing the number of food scrap drop-off sites, more organic material can be composted instead of going to landfills.”

Repairs to disrupt service on E, F, M, R lines in Queens

The MTA’s Fastrack late-night repair and maintenance program will return to the E, F, M and R lines in Manhattan and Queens the next two weeks, causing disruptions on all four subway lines.

The disruptions will take place on four consecutive weeknights this upcoming week from Monday, March 30, through Thursday, April 2; and the following week from Monday, April 6 through early Friday morning, April 10, at the same time. All service changes will take place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning.

During the disruptions, E trains will only operate in Queens between Jamaica Center and 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue. Meanwhile, F trains will operate in two sections: between Jamaica-179th Street and 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue; and between 21st Street-Queensbridge and Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue.

M trains will end service early between Essex Street in Lower Manhattan and Forest Hills-71 Avenue. During the disruptions, M trains will operate shuttle service between Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway in Bushwick.

R trains will end service early between 36th Street in Brooklyn and Forest Hills-71 Avenue. The trains will operate shuttle service in Brooklyn only between 36th Street and 95th Street.

For alternate service between Manhattan and Queens, take the 7 train, available at the 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue or Queensboro Plaza station. The N train is also available at Queensboro Plaza.

Free shuttle buses will also operate in place of trains in Queens between Queensboro Plaza and 74th Street-Roosevelt Avenue, stopping at all affected stations including Queens Plaza, 36th Street, Steinway Street, 46th Street, Northern Boulevard and 65th Street.

The MTA previously disrupted service on the Queens Boulevard local and express lines in November for Fastrack maintenance. Crews cleaned debris and made repairs to station and tunnel infrastructures, signal equipment, tracks and the third rail.

Starting Monday, July 21, there will be service disruptions on the E, F, M and R lines between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. in Queens and Manhattan for four consecutive weeknights, as part of the MTA’s Fastrack maintenance program:

  • E service will be suspended between Roosevelt Avenue and World Trade Center.
  • F service will be suspended between Roosevelt Avenue and 21 Street-Queensbridge.
  • M service will end early between 71 Avenue and Essex Street each night.
  • R service will end early between 71 Avenue and Whitehall Street each night.

Travel alternatives

  • Take the 7 between Manhattan and 74 St-Roosevelt Avenue or Queensboro Plaza.

  • Take the R between Queens Plaza and 71 Avenue. When R service ends, E trains run local between Queens Plaza and 71 Avenue until 10 p.m. After 10 PM, take the E Local between Roosevelt Avenue and 71 Avenue.
  • In Manhattan along 8th Avenue, take the A Local or C instead of the E.
  • Along 53 Street, use the D or nearby 6 and N stations instead.

MTA to increase M train service in the fall

Some of the growing neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens are getting a much needed service boost.

The MTA just announced it plans to increases service to the L and M subway lines this fall, based on analysis of schedules and increased ridership demand.

The service increase will be as follows:

  • On Saturday L train service will be increased a total of 33 round trips between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.
  • On Sunday L train services will be increased a total of 23 round trips between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.
  • Weekday evening L service will be increased a total of 3 round trips
  • Weekday M service will increase one round trip – one northbound trip in the morning and one southbound trip in the late afternoon

In order to lower wait times during peak periods, there will also be increased M line service on Forest Hills-bound weekday morning and Metropolitan Ave- bound weekday afternoon trains.

The service changes, which are scheduled for the fall of this year, will cost about $1.7 million annually. M line service changes will be simultaneous with the Superstorm Sandy-related restoration of R line service.

EXCLUSIVE: MTA to reduce Q54 bus service

While the MTA has planned fare increases for 2015, the agency will decrease service for the Q54.

The bus, which travels on Metropolitan Avenue through train-scarce Middle Village and Ridgewood, connects riders to transit hubs in downtown Jamaica on one end, and Williamsburg, Brooklyn on the other.

During weekday “PM peak” hours—from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.—the Q54 will now run every six minutes and 30 seconds, instead of every five minutes, according to notes from the MTA’s January Transit & Bus Committee Meeting. During the evening schedule, which follows “PM peak” hours, the Q54 will run every 20 minutes instead of every 15.

The planned cuts didn’t sit well with riders.

“It’s slow as it is. I don’t think they send enough (buses). When I get off the train there are a lot of people that wait with me,” said Middle Village resident Jeanette Marmol, who takes the bus to connect to the M train when commuting to work in Manhattan. “That doesn’t make sense. This is a really long route. Why would they slow it down?”

In April, 49 buses citywide—eight in Queens—will see changes, which will account for a slight increase in overall service, Kevin Ortiz, an MTA spokesperson said.

Of the eight Queens buses that will be impacted, the Q54 is the only one that will see an overall reduction. The MTA plans to add a one-minute speed increase between buses during the Q54’s “AM peak” hours of 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

“These changes are made to provide the most efficient and effective service possible and reflect changes in ridership patterns,” Ortiz said.

Woman dies after jumping in front of train at Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues station

A woman was killed Monday morning after she was struck by an M train at a subway station on the Ridgewood border, police said.

The woman, who police said was in her 30s, was pronounced dead about 9:30 a.m. at the Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues station

Cops said the woman was hit after she jumped in front of a Queens-bound train.

Police looking for M train platform groper

M trains riders beware, there is a pervert on the platform.

Cops are looking to identify a suspect who has grabbed the buttocks and private parts of five different women from Feb. 5 to July 30, while the women were standing at the Grand Avenue or Elmhurst Avenue subway stations.

The females were between ages 19 to 47 and all the subway sexual assaults occurred on weekdays. The suspect attacked the women at the Grand Avenue station four times and only in the latest incident on July 30 did he strike at the Elmhurst Avenue station.

In each attack none of the victims were hospitalized or robbed and no weapons were revealed. The suspect increased his attacks in July, with one on the 25th, 26th and 30th.

The perpetrator is described as a 5’7” Hispanic male, between the ages of 25 to 40, weighing 150 to 160 lbs. He was last seen wearing a navy or black baseball hat.

Thief snatches iPhones from women on Queens subway trains

Police are looking for an iPhone thief who robbed two women in separate incidents on Queens subway trains.

Both robberies occurred on northbound M trains near the 67th Street station in Forest Hills, according to police.

On Tuesday, May 14, around 12:30 p.m., the first victim, 37, was riding on the subway looking at her iPhone when the train pulled into the 67th Avenue stop.  After the doors opened, the suspect took the victim’s phone and fled into the station. There were no reported injuries.

The second victim, 20, was on the train around 12:45 p.m. on June 6 when the suspect tried to remove her iPhone from her hands. The victim fought with the suspect and he hit her head on the train door and took her phone and her MetroCard. The suspect then fled the train at the 67th Avenue station. The victim refused medical aid at the scene.

Police describe the suspect as a black male, 16 to 17 years old, around 5’10″ tall and weighing 150 to 160 pounds.

Man’s legs run over while sleeping on tracks of Woodside station

A man sleeping on the tracks of the “E”/”M”/”R” station in Woodside lost his legs to a subway train Sunday.

According to CBS New York, around 4:40 a.m.,  a 26-year-old man from Elizabeth, New Jersey, was laying on the tracks in an allegedly drunken state, when a northbound “E” train severed his legs.

He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and is expected to survive.

Man exposes himself to woman on “M” train

The NYPD is looking for a man who exposed himself to a woman sitting on a Queens bound subway, said police.

The suspect committed the act around 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 14 aboard the “M” train at the Grand Avenue stop in Elmhurst.

He is described as 5’7” tall and was last seen wearing a red shirt, dark pants and black shoes.
