Daylight saving time begins Sunday

Time to spring forward.

Daylight saving time begins early Sunday, March 11 meaning New Yorkers will lose an hour of sleep Saturday night, but gain an extra 60 minutes of sunlight at the end of the day.

The clocks jump from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The changing of the clocks means that it will now be dark when many people wake up — sunrise will be at 7:11 on Monday – but the sun will still be shining when they head home — the sun will set at 7 p.m. Monday night.

The FDNY is also reminding New Yorkers to take this opportunity to change the batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.

The FDNY will be handing out free batteries at locations throughout the city. In Queens the fire department will distribute at the Flushing-Main Street/Roosevelt Ave Train Station and the Jamaica Centre Parsons/Archer Train Station from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
