One construction worker dead, 2 others injured in Harlem building collapse

A worker was crushed to death this morning and two others were injured after a building collapsed in Harlem, authorities said. The construction workers were demolishing the one-story building at 604-606 West 131 Street near Broadway at 7:51 a.m. when the accident occurred, police said. The building, which is owned by Columbia University, is part of a plan on the part of the Ivy League school to expand across a section of upper Manhattan. Read More: New York Post

 

72-year-old man charged with killing neighbor in Brooklyn

Police arrested a 72-year-old Brooklyn man and charged him with killing his neighbor in East Flatbush last night. Cops say Ronald Black shot and killed Cornell Heslop, 43, in the basement of the East 93rd Street home where the two men rented separate rooms, around 10:15 p.m., last night. Heslop was hit in the chest and pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital. Black walked into the 67th precinct around 12:30 a.m. to claim he had been the victim of a robbery, sources said. Appeals Court Upholds City’s Plan To Expand Taxi Service

A federal appeals court has given the city a green light to roll ahead with it’s taxi reform plan despite objections from advocates for the disabled. They’re upset 2,000 new taxi medallions are about to be given out to a fleet that is not in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Taxi and Limousine Commission was ordered to produce a detailed plan on how to remedy the problem. Read More: NY1

 

Rev. Sharpton To Lead Rally In Florida Over Teen’s Shooting

The Reverend Al Sharpton is scheduled to lead a rally in Sanford, Florida today calling for an arrest in the killing of an unarmed teen. He’s traveling with former Governor David Paterson. After the rally, Sharpton will head to Alabama, where his mother passed away this morning. Hundreds gathered yesterday for a rally in Union Square in memory of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Martin was shot and killed in an Orlando suburb last month by a neighborhood watch captain. George Zimmerman says he shot the teen in self defense after a confrontation. Read More: NY1

Immigration and law enforcement officials have arrested and charged 20 people, including five Queens residents and three Brooklyn residents, in connection with a human trafficking operation that allegedly brought women from Russia and Eastern Europe and forced them to dance in various strip clubs in the city. A new city program is offering sweetheart deals to persuade wannabe homeowners to move into parts of Queens ravaged by foreclosure. Homebuyers can earn up to $80,000 in forgiveable loans through the initiative aimed at areas like South Jamaica, Woodhaven and the Rockaways. Food carts may get letter grades

One Queens politician is aiming to make choosing the right food cart as easy as “A, B, C.” Senator Jose Peralta, who represents Jackson Heights, Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst and Woodside, recently introduced a bill that would require local health departments across the state to evaluate and assign a letter grade to mobile food carts. Man pleads guilty to Brooklyn charges in 28-hour rampage

The man charged with a Brooklyn-to-Manhattan murder spree that started with the slaying of his mother’s boyfriend and ended with a brutal stabbing aboard a subway train pleaded guilty today to four murder counts and other charges. Maksim Gelman, 24, had originally pleaded not guilty to the four counts and a raft of other charges in the 13-count indictment. Police suspect murder victims found on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach were murdered by single serial killer


Days before the first anniversary of the discovery of bodies on Gilgo Beach, police said Tuesday that they believe one serial killer is responsible. Young teen pepper-sprays classmates at Harlem high school

A 14-year-old Harlem student blasted her classmates with pepper spray Tuesday, sending eight students to the hospital with minor injuries. Education officials are investigating the incident, which occurred in an Academy for Social Action classroom around 2:30 p.m. Eight students who inhaled the noxious chemicals were rushed from the W. 129th St. school to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital. Deaf woman abducted in Brookyln ‘for sex’

A deaf woman who stormed out on her boyfriend after a fight was snatched off a Williamsburg street by two thugs who tried to pimp her out — and beat her when she refused, police sources said yesterday. The 28-year-old upstate woman told cops she was walking back to her grandmother’s apartment at about 2 a.m. Monday when a man yanked her into his car and told her to “work” for him.
