United Adult Ministries to honor advocates of older adults

United Adult Ministries will present the Rose Kryzak Senior Leadership Award to three honorees at the Flushing House Gala at Flushing Town Hall on May 8.

Honorees state Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky, Steven Goodman, Ed.D., and Alan Weinberg, LCSW, “have all soldiered on in the tradition of Rose Kryzak, making major contributions of service and caring for older adults,” said Robert F. Salant, Flushing House director of community relations.

The UAM Older Adult Ministry Award will be presented to Doris Walker, an elder of the Hollis Presbyterian Church, and Doris Ramsay, a deacon of the Valley Stream Presbyterian Church.

Tenor Daniel Rodriguez will perform at the event and will be honored with a special award for his support of various nonprofits, especially those that serve older adults.

All proceeds from the fundraising gala will support an endowment fund that allows Flushing House to remain affordable for many of the older adults who live there.

73-year-old dies in fire at Flushing retirement home

A two-alarm fire at a Flushing retirement home Thursday killed a 73-year-old woman, police said.

The fire broke out just after midnight in an apartment at Flushing House, located on Bowne Street near 38th Avenue, according to the NYPD. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze about 3o minutes later.

Responding officers found a woman, who police identified as Natalie Blatt, inside the apartment, and she was taken to Flushing Hospital where she was pronounced dead, cops said. No one else was injured or displaced as a result of the blaze.

The fire is still under investigation, according to the FDNY.

Elder Law Seminars hosted by Flushing House

As in previous years, Flushing House has scheduled “Elder Law Seminars” for this spring.

The seminars will focus on how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Medicaid Re‐Design in New York State may impact health care and home care services for older adults. Medicare changes arising from the ACA will also be explored along with asset protection trusts and estate planning.

Ronald Fatoullah, Esq., noted elder law attorney, will give his seminar on Saturday, June 8. Fatoullah will give an overview of the Medicaid program and explain how to protect one’s assets in the event long‐term health care is needed. He will also review five essential legal documents that seniors should have – the importance of a (i) last will and testament (ii) power of attorney (iii) health care proxy (iv) living will and (v) living trust.

AnnMargaret Carrozza, Esq., noted elder law attorney and former state Assemblymember, will give her seminar on Saturday, June 15. Seniors should know how to protect their homes. Carrozza will explore asset protection trusts for primary residences, and estate tax planning, in light of 2013 federal estate tax changes. She will also advise seniors how to get the long‐term care they need through Medicaid while still protecting their assets.

All the seminars will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Flushing House dining room; there will be refreshments available and free handouts from the speakers. The seminars are open to the public – admission is free.  If you wish to attend, RSVP to 347-532‐3025 or torsalant@uam.org.
