Even with the World Cup festivities coming to an end last weekend, more exciting things are on their way to Long Island City.

This Saturday, July 19, the popular LIC Flea & Food, located at the outdoor lot by the waterfront at the corner of Fifth Street and 46th Avenue, will be holding a cornhole contest. Cornhole is a lawn game where players take turns trying to throw bean bags into a hole on a raised platform. The prizes for the contest include a cornhole set and $100 in FleaBucks to spend at the market. Sign up to participate at facebook.com/licflea.

Also this weekend, HGTV’s “Flea Market Flip” will make its return to the LIC Flea with host Lara Spencer, co-anchor on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Each week on the show, contestants, who participate in teams, are given $500 to explore items at different flea markets. The participants search for objects they can buy, fix and then “flip” for a higher selling price. By the end of each show, the contestants display their transformations and battle it out to win all the profits earned.

LIC Flea & Food is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In Astoria, the Astoria Flea & Food at Kaufman Astoria Studios is keeping strong and offering the best in food, drinks, antiques, clothing, art, accessories and much more. The market is open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the outdoor backlot of Kaufman Astoria Studios at 36th Street and 35th Avenue.
Initially the Astoria Flea was expected to run for eight consecutive Sundays starting in May, but it now will stay open until August 31.

The circus is coming to town, but first it stopped by the LIC Flea and International Food Bazaar over the weekend.

The Big Apple Circus made an appearance at the Flea to promote its upcoming shows to potential patrons and provide a little entertainment.

HGTV’s show “Flea Market Flip,” where contestants are given about $500 to search for items, revitalize them and resell for a profit, was also at the Flea this weekend with host Lara Spencer.

“Rather than just taste the different foods, we can take in the entertainment too,” said Flea-goer Landy Wu. “The kids always like the circus. If there is an opportunity I will bring them.”

The Big Apple Circus will be playing shows at Lincoln Center from October 25 through January 12. The circus also gave free tickets to the show with a free raffle.

“We are so excited; [my son] has been talking about the Big Apple Circus all week,” said Long Island City resident Lindsy Parrott. “There are so many kids in the neighborhood I think it’s smart for the LIC Flea to capitalize on the demographic and bring this to get the kids excited to come to the Flea with their parents.”

Manolo Blank, a self-defined ironic mime, represented the circus with small performances. The mime, who is also a clown, walked on stilts, juggled, told jokes and danced, to the excitement of children.

“It’s awesome, I am enjoying [the mime’s] character,” said Melqueuoroziry Capellan.

Queens residents watching HGTV’s “Flea Market Flip” might notice a familiar location.

“Flea Market Flip” is a program that visits different flea markets around the country, gives its contestants $500 and then sets them loose to buy, fix and flip items at the market for a higher price. At the end of the program, one team wins the grand total of profits made that day.

On Sunday, July 21, camera crews were at the LIC Flea and International Food Bazaar to film an upcoming episode.

“It’s pretty exciting seeing all the cameras and crew walking around,” said LIC resident Mary Elizabeth, who was at the market during filming. “I’ll have to watch the show now to see if I can find myself in the background.”

“It’s a fun place to be,” said Rebecca Tase of the market, which launched Saturday, June 15. “You meet a lot of interesting people.”

Tony Dillon said this past weekend was his first time at the market and that he enjoyed the booths that appeal to a wide range of people.

The weekend also marked the beginning of complimentary shuttle bus service from Astoria to the LIC Flea. The shuttle departs at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. from 30th Avenue and 31St Street, and runs every Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s great that Queens has markets like this, and the location is fantastic,” said Indra Patel. “I live pretty close to here, so I’ve been here every weekend since it started. I love how many different food shops there are. It’s almost like every day is a totally different market.”

Vendor and owner of the Burger Garage, Tom, said he is glad to be a part of LIC Flea, especially now that they have been voted the number one burger in the borough.

“I enjoy my weekends here,” said Karen Overton, another vendor and owner of Recycle a Bicycle. “It’s worth it to be here.”

LIC Flea runs every Saturday and Sunday during the summer from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is located in the parking lot at the corner of 46th Avenue and 5th Street.
