LIC’s Entrepreneur Space: Helping businesses grow for the past three years

For the past three years the Entrepreneur Space in Long Island City has been that light at the end of the tunnel for many aspiring self-starters looking to get into the food business.

The Entrepreneur Space, located at 36-46 37th St., is a 5,500-square-foot food and business incubator available for clients to rent by shifts, on a 24/7 basis, for a “low cost.” The space is administered by the Queens Economic Development Corporation and funded by the New York City Economic Development Corporation.

“There are people out there that want to [start] their own business and running a food business legally cannot be done from your home kitchen,” said Kathrine Gregory, founder of the Entrepreneur Space. “What we are doing is we are taking people out of their home kitchen and giving them an opportunity to grow a business [at] their own pace.”

The space offers clients a professional kitchen atmosphere, which includes equipment such as commercial mixers, a hearth oven, small wares and pans, a freezer, and cold and dry storage. Clients bring any ingredients or packaging needed. A client assistant is also available to help the clients with any tasks.

“We always have staff in the kitchen,” said Gregory. “You aren’t in the kitchen by yourself. You don’t have to worry about something going wrong.”

There are also classrooms and conference rooms available to rent for meetings, teaching and small or large events.

Since starting in 2011, over 400 aspiring business men and women, who Gregory calls “food-preneurs,” have come through the Entrepreneur Space. Some realized starting a food business was not for them, while others continued creating their treats.

One business that has been with the space since the very beginning is MitchMallows, which offers handcrafted marshmallows with unique flavors, such as churros and ginger wasabi.

“It was a godsend that the Entrepreneur Space even exists, otherwise a business like mine would have no home,” said Mitch Greenberg, owner and head chef of MitchMallows. “It’s the perfect solution to start up culinary businesses like mine. My business keeps growing and everyone at the kitchen is terrific to work with.”

The Entrepreneur Space celebrated its third anniversary on Feb. 11, with about 40 clients displaying and selling their products.

The celebration’s theme commemorated the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs, where the Belgian Waffle made its debut. MariePaule Vermersch, daughter of the originator of the waffle in the U.S., was on hand to make waffles with the requisite powdered sugar, whipped cream and strawberries.

The event was sponsored by Coffeed, Fairway, Fortune Society and Square Wine & Spirits.

“It feels really great, I can’t believe it has been three years,” said Gregory. “The best part comes back to the people who come in with their dreams and now they see a light at the end of the tunnel and they see how they can do it. That’s the exciting part; that’s the inspiring part.”

Fairway supermarket opens in Queens

Foul weather did not dampen the excitement on the lines of eager customers awaiting the grand opening of the long-anticipated Fairway Market.

“It’s been so long since we had a nice, big [food] store like this,” said Doris Mayne of Douglaston.  “It’s about time.”

Customers lined up over an hour before the doors first opened, anxiously awaiting the store that has been over two years in the making.

“I love Fairway, I used to have to travel to the one in Long Island,” said Martin Hoffman, one of the first customers to enter the 56,000-square-foot market.  “Their aisles are wide and their selection is superb.”

Fairway – located at 242-02 61st Avenue in the Douglaston Plaza Shopping Center’s Lower Level – held its ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, November 16 with politicians, residents and Fairway officials on hand.

“We’re really delighted for the people of eastern Queens,” said Councilmember Mark Weprin.  “It really is a very big anchor in this community.”

The Douglaston Fairway is the first to open within Queens and is the largest of the nine in the city.

“The Douglaston area is, what I call, a food desert,” said Howie Glickberg, Fairway’s third-generation CEO. “For whatever reason, there are just not a lot of food stores in that area. We are really going to shake everybody up.”

The grand opening has been a process long in the making after some zoning issues and a full renovation and expansion of the Waldbaum’s building.

While local residents have been waiting for a market in the area, this is not just an average food store.

The aisles are filled floor to ceiling with not only typical supermarket fare, but specialty, imported, organic and exotic items.

The store will include a full kosher bakery featuring artisanal breads and New York City-style bagels made daily, a wide array of organic produce, a seafood department, butcher and cheese counter featuring over 600 cheeses.

Also featured in the market is a café that can seat 60 customers and will offer sushi, salad, yogurt and dozens of hot foods prepared fresh on premise that many customers eagerly sampled.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was on hand for the ceremony and spoke about the economic boost the store will provide.

“This is exactly what New Yorkers are looking for, jobs in these tough economic times,” Bloomberg said.

Fairway has hired more than 450 employees in the store that covers more than one acre of land.

Bloomberg also noted that Fairway has made a commitment to employ veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

“I’m not supposed to give plugs for one company over another, but you could do a lot worse than buying all your stuff here,” Bloomberg said, who also has a Fairway coffee named after him, Gotham Blend, which Glickberg described as all business with spicy undertones.

Fairway is open daily from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Activist Patricia Dolan killed crossing Hillside Avenue

Patricia Dolan, longtime Community Board 8 member, president of the Queens Civic Congress, Kew Gardens Hills Civic Association and the founder of the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Conservancy, was struck and killed as she crossed Hillside Avenue on Tuesday, November 15. Police say Dolan, 72, was crossing the thoroughfare near 198th Street — on her way to a CB 8 Transportation Committee meeting — when she was struck by a 1998 Nissan sedan driven by an unidentified 57-year-old woman.  EMS responded to the scene and took Dolan to Jamaica Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Douglaston Fairway weeks away

To the delight of grocery shoppers in northeast Queens, Fairway Market in Douglaston is only weeks away from its grand opening.

On November 16, Fairway – located at 242-02 61st Avenue in the Douglaston Plaza Shopping Center’s Lower Level – will take over the closed Waldbaum’s with 56,000-square-feet of wall-to-wall food products, fresh produce, a butcher shop, a 60-seat cafe and much more.

According to Howie Glickberg, Fairway’s third generation CEO, over 300 jobs have been added to the local economy, including expert department heads.

“The Douglaston area is, what I call, a food desert,” said Glickberg. “For whatever reason, there are just not a lot of food stores in that area. We are really going to shake everybody up.”

Glickberg says that Fairway is not your typical supermarket, as food products always come first. There will be household amenities available but the main focus will be on specialty imported items, organic and kosher foods, their full-service catering department and dozens of prepared hot foods from Fairway’s kitchen. From the family’s humble beginnings with a small fruit and vegetable stand in 1933, Glickberg has opened multiple Fairway Markets in the New York area, with the Douglaston location being the largest yet.

“Everybody is very happy and excited about the grand opening,” said Susan Seinfeld, district manager of Community Board 11. “The sooner, the better.”

The grand opening next month has been a process two years in the making after some zoning issues and a full renovation and expansion of the Waldbaum’s building. The store will be open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. seven days a week.
