As promised, the MTA is set to debut its live bus tracking service in all of Queens and the rest of Brooklyn.

The MTA will launch Bus Time, which allows riders to follow real-time location of buses through any web-enabled smartphone or computer via GPS, on March 9, the transit agency announced Monday.

Bus Time users can also text an intersection or street address to 511123 to receive a message listing local bus routes or find out information by using a smartphone with a QR-code reader. The QR-code is printed on the Guide-A-Ride schedules posted at bus stops.

The expansion adds more than 9,000 additional bus stops to the Bus Time system, according to the MTA.

Bus Time started serving all of Staten Island’s bus routes in January 2012. Bus Time was later expanded to include all Bronx and Manhattan routes as well as Brooklyn’s B63 and B61 lines.

The MTA recently announced plans to expand the company’s real-time bus tracking service to the boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan.

“Bus Time has proven extremely popular among bus riders on Staten Island and the Bronx – and I can tell you that because customers have come to me on buses in the Bronx and said we did a really great job on Bus Time,” said Fernando Ferrer, MTA acting chairman. “They find it useful and easy to access, and I think that’s a tremendous endorsement of what we have been doing. Bus Time is so helpful to our customers that we have scheduled an extremely aggressive timetable to introduce it to three other boroughs.”

Through text messaging, web alerts or apps, Bus Time allows customers to see how far a bus is from a certain stop. The service was launched in Staten Island on January 11, 2012 and in the Bronx in November that same year.

The MTA said the expansion to the other three boroughs will be completed by April of 2014.
