Bus-only lanes coming to Woodhaven Boulevard

Bus-only lanes are to be painted along a 1.4-mile stretch of Woodhaven Boulevard by late September, a representative from the Department of Transportation (DOT) said.

The lanes are being added on Woodhaven Boulevard between Elliot and Metropolitan avenues to help ease congestion on the heavily traveled roadway.

They will be one lane out from the curb which will allow the buses a faster transition when dropping off and picking up riders, according to Joan Byron, director of policy at the Pratt Center for Community Development.

“These [bus-only] lanes are to strictly address the issue of congestion along the boulevard,” Byron said. “With the addition of the one out from the curb lanes, the buses will not have to go in and out anymore which will help to ease the congestion.”

The lane nearest the curb will continue to be used for parking, officials said.

The start date for painting depends on weather conditions and the schedule of other DOT projects, the agency’s representative said.  The painting should take several weeks, weather permitting, the representative added.

The lanes can be used at all times of the day by other vehicles making a right turn.

Weekend bus trial to expand service along Vernon Boulevard

The western Queens waterfront will soon get a taste of extended bus service.

The Q103 bus line, which connects Astoria and Long Island City via Vernon Boulevard, will begin offering service to riders on weekends starting in June, according to the MTA.

The weekend schedule will serve as a trial program for the transit agency to receive comments from the community at an MTA public hearing to be scheduled at a later date. After the public hearing, a decision will be made to keep the service or not, the MTA said. It was not determined how long the trial program would run.

“At long last, weekend service on the Q103 bus line is in sight,” said State Sen. Michael Gianaris, who has been calling for the extra service on the bus line since 2011. “The need for more public transportation in our area will only continue to grow, especially on weekends, as more people flock to our waterfront to visit our restaurants, parks and cultural institutions.”

The weekend service will run from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and, in addition, the Q103 will also extend its weekday service hours until 9 p.m., instead of 7:30 p.m. The travel path and bus stops will not be affected, according to the MTA.

“The expansion of service will not only benefit the increasing amount of riders but it will also give our growing cultural institutions that ability to generate more traffic to their venues,” said Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer.

Local leaders and business owners see the need to expand the Q103’s service as crucial to the growing neighborhoods, with the increase of new residential towers coming into the areas bringing more people.

According to officials, the Q103 ridership has been increasing in the past years, rising from 558 riders per day in 2011 to about 790 in 2014.

“The Q103 service is a vital link for the cultural organizations of western Queens,” said Jenny Dixon, director of The Noguchi Museum. “It enables visitors to go from The Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park in the north to SculptureCenter, MoMA PS1, Dorsky Gallery and the Chocolate Factory to the south.”

MTA to restore, boost weekend bus service on two Queens routes

Queens bus riders will soon have more options on the weekends.

Starting this Sunday, the MTA is restoring service on the Q31 and will begin Sunday service on the Q77.

The Q31 will operate on Saturdays from 8:20 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays from 9:10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., according to the transit agency. In addition to its existing Saturday service, the Q77 will run from 6:55 a.m. to 10:09 p.m. on Sundays.

“We continue to work hard for our customers by strengthening service whenever we have sustainable resources to do so,” said NYC Transit President Carmen Bianco.

The increased bus service is part of an estimated $7.9 million investment the MTA is scheduled to make throughout the city.

Pols call for more city buses to run through Douglaston

More city buses need to roll through Douglaston, local elected officials demanded Monday, calling the neighborhood a “transit desert.”

Five major bus routes, coupled with sporadic service, are not enough to serve the area’s growing ridership, according to Congressmember Steve Israel and Assemblymember Nily Rozic.

“This is not just a matter of convenience for Douglaston residents,” Israel said. “This is just the smart thing to do.”

The two called for an increase in federal and state funding to buy more local and express buses, bus lines and bus stops in the neighborhood they said was “underserved” by mass transit.

Borough President Melinda Katz, State Senator Tony Avella, Assemblymember Ed Braunstein, Councilmember Paul Vallone and the Straphanger’s Campaign are also on board.

Rozic said current service was “unreliable, unsustainable and unacceptable.”

But an MTA spokesperson said improvements have been made to the QM3 and QM8’s running times and frequency in the past year.

The Q36 has also been extended and the Q76 weekend service has been restored and expanded, the spokesperson said. Weekend Q31 service will also be restored this spring.
