A knight in shining armor

With the closing of so many hospitals, it’s been amazing to many that Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, which straddles the border of Brooklyn’s Bushwick and Queens’ Ridgewood, has survived. Not that it hasn’t been a bumpy road. But it appears a “knight in shining armor” has arrived to save the hospital for the growing, bustling, [...]

It all began when I was seven years old and my mom dressed me for Purim in the costume of Queen Esther, who Jewish people believed saved them from destruction at the hands of the wicked Haman thousands of years ago. It stuck in my psyche that I was a direct descendant of the queen. [...]

What a week of shopping!

What a wonderful world of shopping this past week was! Did you know that owning an American Girl doll seems to be every little girl’s dream? For those of you who remember the Cabbage Patch Kids, this is the latest craze. As caring grandmas, my daughter’s mother-in-law, Susan Sohmer, and I took four-year-old Morgan to [...]

Friday began with a downpour that seemed like it was never ending. The traffic stood still for hours, but our Mayoral Forum was a huge success. To my delight all the candidates, Democrats, Republicans and Independent, made it through the stormy morning to meet at Terrace on the Park to address our audience. It was [...]

For multiple years, it has been my pleasure to serve on the board of the Queens Museum, a gem of a cultural icon hidden in the huge Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, opposite the Unisphere. It has been a sleeping giant in the museum world and is about to have a home to match its quality. The [...]

The sky was a brilliant blue and no cloud could find its way to blemish the day on Monday, Memorial Day. Four-year-old Jonah and I took a ride to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to check on our building that is under construction. It will become the new home of the Home Reporter and Brooklyn Spectator, our [...]

It was amazing to me that, in one week, I was “with” Clive Davis, Quincy Jones and Morgan Sohmer. The first is a giant in the entertainment industry, “Q” is a musical genius and the last is my granddaughter, who celebrated her fourth birthday with great glee. I also had the pleasure of being present [...]

This past weekend was a “challenging” one for me, celebrating Mother’s Day without Stu. But my family came to the rescue again. Of course, we all love our grandchildren and shower them with affection, so on Saturday I visited Stu’s daughter Mimi and her boys in Manhattan. My daughter Elizabeth, with Jonah and Addison, drove [...]

For over a year now, my son Josh, his wife Tracey and their nine-month-old Hudson have lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, overlooking the Brooklyn flea market from their apartment 29 stories up. They have watched the huge crowds come and go every Saturday and Sunday. Josh imagined what it could mean to Long Island City if [...]

When I got a facial this past “getaway weekend” the aesthetician began by saying, “Mrs. Schneps, it’s my pleasure to give you a wonderful experience.” That set the tone for what happened all weekend. My friend of 60 years is Judy Sheindlin, known to the world as “Judge Judy.” She and her handsome, loving husband [...]
