May they not be lost in vain

Our world stopped as the shocking news filled the airwaves. It broke our collective hearts to learn that 20 little lives were snuffed out before they even began. I sat and watched in shock to learn that 20-year-old madman Adam Lanza had massacred 20 innocent little ones and their beloved teachers in a senseless act [...]

A few years ago my husband Stu and I bought a timeshare in St. John, Virgin Islands, for the second week in December. So for years that has been our winter getaway. This year we switched our reservation to Cancun to make it easier for my daughter Elizabeth, living in Dallas, and Stu’s son Harvey, [...]

When I receive an invitation from my friends Mary Ann and Joe Mattone to their annual elegant holiday party, I know the holiday season has officially begun, and thankfully this year with all the recent tragic events of Sandy, it is a chance to celebrate. I think it’s what makes us able to carry on, [...]

I knew it would be special to have my daughter Samantha host Thanksgiving day and Stu’s daughter Mimi gather their side of the family on Saturday night, but this year was even better because of special guests who added to the joy of Thanksgiving. For several years my company, The Queens Courier and now the [...]

The long Thanksgiving weekend has always been my favorite because we all tend to stop and enjoy each other, no matter our faith. Sunday was a spectacularly sunny, clear, warm day but it brought a farewell to Larry Levine, a beloved man. To the sound of “Taps” with soldiers paying their last respects, Larry was laid to rest on this peaceful day. As his daughter-in-law Rosie Starr said, he navigated his life as “an officer and gentleman.” “Larry [...]

Sandy has shown us the best and worst in people. It’s hard for me to fathom how painful it is for those who have lost their homes and are living with no heat and hot water. How the overwhelming losses must tear at the hearts of those suffering in the aftermath. At the same time [...]

My heart and prayers go out to those who have lost so much after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy. I wonder if the power of friendships was more emboldened by the recent crisis. I know mine were. The meaningful Beatles song reminds me that we get along “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Those [...]

Many powerful women had an impact on me this week. Congressmember Carolyn Maloney invited me to the Eleanor’s Legacy Luncheon at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan, and then to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, where the amazing Lois Christie was holding her international hair show, bringing people together from around the world to celebrate and share [...]

A Glorious Afternoon with Hudson

It was a stunningly sunny and brisk Saturday and I called my son Josh, now living in Brooklyn with his wife Tracey and their baby Hudson, to see if they were free for brunch. Stu and I took his new convertible, and, with the top down, made our way to their new home. Their hot [...]
