Visiting day memories

I felt déjà vu on the visit to the day camp my grandchildren are going to, because it’s the same one my daughter attended. Then, a few days later, I visited my grandson at sleepaway camp which totally reminded me of the sleepaway camps I had gone to ‘til I got married! The sun was [...]

As the sun broke through the clouds we made our way into the Fordham section of the Bronx to find the “catering” gate of the enormous Bronx Botanical Garden to attend the wedding of dear friend Claire Shulman’s granddaughter. I’d never been to the famous and expansive 250 acres of gardens. But I heard that [...]

My favorite weekend moments are when I can watch the Sunday Show, eat breakfast in bed and read my Sunday newspapers. I guess because it happens that way so rarely, that when it does it’s a real treat and so a perfect Sunday began. The market in Astoria features many vendors with unique items and [...]

Last year, my son Josh and my daughter Elizabeth created the flea market in LIC, and this year, they created the Astoria Flea & Food at the backlot of Kaufman Astoria Studios. And I’m addicted to both. First I love a bargain, but most of all I love the creative people who bring their food [...]

It was our annual Yunis family gathering hosted by Stu’s daughter Mimi Broner in Kent, Conn., but what added to the joy was that Stu’s son Jon, who lives in Sarasota, Florida, was getting married to his lovely bride Hillary. It was a glorious sunny weekend and made even brighter by the love in the [...]

Whenever I go to the theatre I’m in awe of the multiple-story-high, brightly lit billboards up and down Broadway. With seating opportunities on newly created plazas it’s a natural place for street performers and the day I was there two “cow girls” in skimpy outfits were singing their hearts out and collecting money for their [...]

It was a week balanced with work and celebrations and remarkable fundraising events, and I relished each one. Particularly I adored meeting my journalism hero Charlie Rose, who was honored this past week by the Museum of the Moving Image. The honorees were Charlie Rose and Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO of HBO. Since I [...]

One of my favorite shows, “The Lion King,” has a powerful song that has special meaning for me, especially this past week. It’s “They Live in You.” The lyrics are, “Have faith … they live in your reflection … they live in you.” It helped me to get through the past week and helped my [...]

It was an event I couldn’t refuse. Geraldo Rivera was invited by the graduates of the College of Staten Island’s social work majors to be their commencement speaker. What made it so special was that the school’s campus is the former Willowbrook State school, a place where he helped make history and where my daughter [...]

What a week! We broke all our records for attendance at our Top Women in Business Ultimate Networking Event last week. More people celebrated the women we honored than in the past 13 years when we began recognizing the achievements of the extraordinary women of our borough. Almost a thousand people walked the red carpet [...]
