Willson vs. The Gershwins this Weekend

Two great musicals are running on concurrent weekends here in Queens. I had the pleasure of attending both of them this past Saturday and Sunday. If you could only see one, how would you choose? Let’s see.

Meredith Willson’s (yes, two ll’s) “The Music Man” is on stage at Theatre by the Bay, 13-00 209 St. in Bayside. Producer/director Larry Bloom has once again assembled a large cast of local performers. There’s show stealing seven year old Charlie LoMonaco as Winthrop. Full grown Sue Fiebert is a scene stealer as well playing ditzy Eulalie Shinn, the mayor’s wife. Mesmerizing Professor Harold Hill (John Canning) and beautiful Michele Mazzocco as Marion the librarian keep things interesting. Call (718) 428-6363 for info.

Meanwhile, in Douglaston, the Marathon Little Theatre Group offers “Crazy for You,” a melodious mixture of George and Ira Gershwin’s lyrics and music. Just travel back in time to the 1930s and enjoy this lighthearted look at love. Director Dave Shapiro and his staff have a warmhearted crew of actors along with solid behind the scenes support. Onstage, Melissa Cavaliere as the female lead, Polly, is eminently genuine. Her sister Julie has joined the team to dance and smile with energy and skill. The Follies Girls are very easy to look at while the Cowboy Quartet offer plenty of good humor. Call (718) 229-4644 or (718) 428-1580.

Why not catch both shows. It’s a very relaxing way to spend just a portion of your weekend. Of course, for next week’s show by Beari, save me a seat on the aisle.
