Roughly two weeks ago, Jason Bay received a contract offer from the New York Mets. The offer was reportedly worth 65 million dollars over the duration of 4 years. Here we are now roughly two weeks later, and the offer is still dangling in the offseason breeze. Not a peep has emanated out of Bay’s camp to indicate whether or not he is leaning towards accepting or rejecting the Mets contract proposal.
Bay’s contract demands are categorically steep, in terms of years and salary, steeper than what the Mets currently have on the table. Thus, one theory for Bay’s blatant disregard could be that he is holding out for another big market club to come along, show interest, and appease his desires. Contract security, and sadly greediness are two of the more common fetishes amongst major leaguers today. The Red Sox are debating whether or not to expand their payroll to sign either Bay or Matt Holliday, and the Yankees can surely do better than Brett Gardner in leftfield. If they really wanted that upgrade, I’m sure they’d find the money someplace.
Another reasonable theory to toss around is that Bay is not holding out for more years or dollars, but just another offer from a team that has a little bit more of a clearer path towards winning – again…Red Sox? Yankees? It is sad to say, but that clear path is something the Mets just do not have right now. Simply acquiring Bay certainly would not be enough to put the Mets into the upper echelon of the National League.
Bay’s reluctance to respond is downright alarming, I would prefer a simple “Thanks but no thanks” rather than this “on the edge of my seat awaiting a response” nonsense. If the latter theory is the real reason for Bay’s silence, than it is safe to say Bay views the Mets as nothing more than a last resort for him.
Telepathy is unfortunately not one of my strong suits, so all we can do is hope that Omar Minaya and his crew are at least considering alternatives behind closed doors. They need to begin to at least speculate if after this clear exhibit of disfavor that Bay is currently displaying, is he someone they want representing the New York Mets next season? Do they want to ink a guy to a relatively “untradeable” contract and get stuck with a miserable player who does not want to be in Flushing, and showcases his unhappiness day after day on the field and off? Minaya has jumped the gun on transactions before, just this offseason he’s already had to restructure a contract a mere one week after the pact was signed. Let’s just hope he keeps an open mind and doesn’t believe in the saying “It’s Bay or bust in 2010.”
Anyway, what do you guys think of this little cold shoulder routine by Jason Bay? Are you cool with it, or do you think he’s being disrespectful towards the Mets? Has your estimation of him taken a dip? Sound off below! Finally, I just wanted to say Merry Christmas everyone! Hope your holiday is pleasant, and you get everything you wished for! Thanks for stopping by, it means the world to me!
