When I visited my cousin Arthur Kornberg, who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine, he modestly described his success as “10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration.” He was saying his genes didn’t do it, his hard work did!
Well, this past week I took my staff to Power Brain Training Center in Bayside. My goal was to help us all find ways to more effectively deal with the stress in our lives and use the full power of our minds.
For many years, I’ve believed that physical exercise benefits my mind. I work out five days a week, not just to make my body better but also to take away any “knots” that grow in my gut during the night. Somehow, after I’ve worked out I feel like I can conquer the world! I believe my “genes” may have helped me be an energized person, but I also believe that the endorphins released by exercising help me.
Too frequently, I find some staff members repeatedly ill and others always tired. When I met Alina Pikula at the Alma Bank opening I immediately became fascinated by her work – helping people use more of their minds – to improve their “performance.”
I immediately asked her if she could accommodate my staff one morning for an hour-long training session. She agreed.
Here was an opportunity to help us all to use our brains more fully – after all, our brain “guides all our life activity from breathing and heart beats, to muscle movement to sensation and emotions,” so the company’s literature says.
I’ve always believed that to be true!
So there we gathered, sitting on the floor in a large circle in the Power Brain Training Center. Pikula showed us slides explaining just what my cousin Arthur said. We all have so much more brainpower available to us than we got from our ancestors. We just need to tap into it – to unfreeze our brain and use the great untapped parts of our mind to improve our performance both personally and professionally.
Pikula put us through some body relaxing exercises and then we shared relaxation massages with each other as the “models.” I think we all felt the hour was well spent. It reminded me and my staff that reducing stress, maintaining a positive outlook and staying fit will help us to be happier, more productive and lead “successful” lives. Try it, you’ll love it!

‘Mary Stuart’ –
History Brought to Life
As a lover of the theatre, once again I was enchanted by a play I saw. It had a powerful cast that made “Mary Stuart,” at the Broadhurst Theatre, come alive.
The disturbing story with actors costumed in modern dress takes place in 1587 when England was a Protestant country. The Catholics, encouraged by the Pope, are trying to overthrow Protestant Queen Elizabeth.
Catholic Mary Stuart, who escaped her home in Scotland after a coup by the Protestants, believes she has a strong claim to the throne of England but has been under house arrest by Elizabeth, who fears a plot by Mary’s Catholic followers to kill her. There is a brilliantly-played battle of wills leading to the dramatic end.
I was enthralled by the powerful acting of Janet McTeer and Harriet Walter. They made the characters come alive. What a great evening for me of art and education!
