And here we go again. More Jose Reyes news, and as it usually is nowadays, it’s not positive. Hello and welcome back Mets fans. As I’m sure you’ve heard, the blood work that Jose Reyes underwent on Thursday in place of making his Grapefruit League debut yielded some pretty disheartening results. Though it’s nothing majorly harmful to his health and nothing that should cause us to stay up all night and fret for the 2010 Mets chances for success, it’s still aggravating that the guy keeps hitting roadblock after roadblock and can’t get on the field already.
It was announced Friday morning that Reyes’ blood work revealed he’s got an overactive thyroid condition. He was sent back to New York where he’ll undergo more testing on Monday. With any luck, Reyes could be cleared to finally get in a game on Friday. Thyroid issues aren’t life or death. I know someone who has the exact same issue Reyes is dealing with, and she easily combats it and keeps it under control with a small amount of prescribed medicine every day. I’ve got a fairly upbeat feeling Reyes will be just fine, and that this setback will be behind us before we know it. However I’m still just a tiny bit perturbed.
This team really just can’t catch a break. We’re like Edgar Allen Poe. It’s as if a cloud of unluckiness is hovering over our heads constantly raining misery down upon us. Reyes has had it rough lately. His 2009 was lost due to a leg injury. He’s had to deal with questioning from FBI officials, followed by questioning from the New York media regarding that meeting. Now he’s finally recovered from his leg woes and this happens. I mean who saw this coming? You just can’t make this stuff up. It’s ridiculous how these unfortunate events are constantly happening to the Mets. Coupled with Reyes’ struggles, are Carlos Beltran and Kelvim Escobar beginning 2010 in the disabled list, Frankie Rodriguez has yet to see any action due to pink eye of all things, so who knows when he’ll be back and whether or not he’ll get enough spring training time to shed his rust and be ready to earn those saves in 2010. And to top that all off, Elmer Dessens had to leave a ballgame on Tuesday after getting drilled on the right leg by a Brian McCann liner. That just reeks of unluckiness if you ask me.
Events like these are very, very discouraging. The season has not even begun, and the injuries and already piling up. There’s still a month left of spring training, who knows what other travesties will come over us? 2010 is beginning to look very much like 2009 did, especially with the woes surrounding Beltran and Reyes. These 2 men more than anyone were supposed to be the big returnees who helped guide the Mets ship back on course to a postseason appearance. Now with Beltran out until who really knows when and Reyes accumulating rust by starting his spring training games late, the feeling of pessimism is already beginning to shroud the Mets. Spring training is supposed to be a time of hoping and dreaming. However with all these setbacks combined with a less than stellar offseason, I’m not so sure positive hoping and fantasizing is the first thing on Mets fans minds right now.
What do you guys think? What is your feeling regarding the Mets right now?
