Almost a year before the general election and at least six months ahead of the primary, endorsements have already begun to trickle in .

Former Mayor Ed Koch recently endorsed Melinda Katz for borough president and now Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Christine Quinn has picked up support for the state’s largest grocery workers union.

United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500, which represents grocery workers in New York City, threw their support behind the speaker citing her strong support for the middle class and fair wages.

“For the past decade, Speaker Christine Quinn has proven to be a leader who has the ability to be creative, courageous and forward thinking when it comes to the issues that truly affect the livelihood of our members,” said Bruce W. Both, the union’s president.

Quinn is likely to face a crowded field in the race’s Democratic primary with Comptroller John Liu, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former Comptroller Bill Thompson all likely to be on the ballot.
