Nine new November shows

As autumn days grow shorter, the list of November’s live performances grows longer. I look forward to attending many of the local shows. Don’t forget to leave room on your calendars as well.

Opening night for Douglaston Community Theatre (DCT) on Friday November 6 (for three weekends) will showcase a British comedy called “Funny Money.” Basically, a bunch of regular folks stumble on a very irregular stash of bucks.

On Saturday night November 7, the opening performance of “Carousel” by Larry Bloom’s Theatre by the Bay takes their bows. Anyone who has ever enjoyed a true musical classic will enjoy the troupe’s version.

On Sunday, I’ll be happy to take a seat on the aisle for FSF Community Theatre Group’s version of the music-with-murder-with comedy “Curtains”. Maryellen Pierce is directing her group of fine community performers in downtown Flushing.

After a week to catch my breath, I’ll be heading out to see Ray Palen and the Minstrel Players for Sherlock Holmes in “The Hound of the Baskervilles.” The Palen family has theatre in their blood and roots in Queens. It’s a long drive to their venue in Northport but certainly with the trip.

I hope to catch Theatre A La Carte’s Golden Age of Radio which opens the weekend of November 13. Located for many successful years in Douglaston, their opening night performance always earns an encore with their delicious (complimentary) buffet which follows the show.

The Killing Kompany keeps coming up with comedy throughout the year. They will perform in and around Queens this month. Jon Avner’s menu of murderers interacts with the audience as they eat dinner and follow clues. It’s always a great evening.

The Parkside Players in Forest Hills, boast years of successful performances. Their November project is a comedy “Play On.”

The Phoenix Players in College Point present “The Children’s Hour.” They perform at historic Poppenhusen Institute.

Larger venues are home to Flushing Town Hall, Queens Theatre in the Park, Queensborough Performing Arts Center, Kupferberg Center at Queens College, the Outrageous Fortune Company and Astoria Performing Arts Center. Other more cozy locations shine their spotlights this November for The Marathon Little Theatre Group, St. Gregory’s Theatre Group in Bellerose and Thalia Spanish Theatre in Sunnyside.

Phew. I’ve barely scratched the surface. The fact is, there are many more than nine new shows in November. Make it your business to see more than one.

As always, save me a seat on the aisle.
