I am so honored to be a Delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina representing the 5th Congressional District of New York!
Day 1 of the Convention was so exciting. The day started with a New York State Delegation breakfast at the DoubleTree hotel. We heard great speeches from New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and our Senior United States Senator Chuck Schumer. The overall theme of the morning speeches was that New York State is the progressive capital of the nation.
Congressman Joseph Crowley threw a luncheon for all Queens Delegates and boy are there a lot of us Queens folk! Congressman Crowley is a great County Leader and made sure we were all fired up and ready to go. After leaving the Congressman Crowley’s luncheon Comedy Centrals Indecision Blog stopes me and asked me to describe Governor Romney in three words. My response was “He’s not Obama!”.
As five o’clock came and the convention was about to start, you could feel the excitement in the air. I was so inspired by last nights speeches. I am even prouder now to be a Democrat. It is always great to hear Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney speak. She asked the convention where are all the women? She got a huge round of applause from delegates.
The late Senator Edward Kennedy via video reminded us all why he was the liberal lion of the Senate. Watching a video of clips of his Senate race against Governor Romney were very funny. overall the tribute video was very moving and there were many delegates with tears in their eyes.
Governor Martin O’Malley of Maryland laid out the nights theme….”Move America Forward, Not Back”! The Keynote Speech was given by San Antonio’s Mayor Julian Castro. Mayor Castro clearly has a bright future ahead of him. His story was so moving and he reminded all of us why we need to re-elect President Obama in the fall.
The best speech of the night was from our First Lady Michelle Obama. The First Lady or “Mom In Chief” brought the house down. She gave an intimate picture of who President Obama really is.
Overall it was a great night and everyone is fired up! Remember it’s time to Move America Forward, not back.
