In “Magical, Musical Moments IX: Back To Basics,” Beari Productions shares highlights from eight very different musicals. Act I opens with four songs from “Pippin.” There is a stirring solo of “No Time At All,” and three ensemble numbers.
“Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” follows with another four numbers, including a deliciously delightful duet of “A Little Priest.”
“Hello Dolly” features a poignant rendition of “Before the Parade Passes By.” Act I concludes with an enthusiastic tribute to “Godspell.” “Prepare Ye” is performed with fervor, followed by the equally powerful “God Save The People.”
Act II begins with the classical number “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess.” All-time favorite “West Side Story” treats us to not four but six musical numbers because, when it’s “West Side Story,” how do you choose? Every song is a winner, but “America” and “Officer Krupke” stand out.
“La Cage Aux Folles” brought us the immortal “I Am What I Am,” performed here as “We Are What We Are.” This anthem to individuality is performed with gusto, passion, and some surprises.
The show concludes with “Seasons of Love” from “Rent,” a beautiful tribute to the life and untimely death of it’s young creator, Jonathan Larsen.
The cast members brought a unique style to this Beari Production, directed by Debbie Bendana and produced by her husband Rene Bendana,. Mr. Alan Kingsley, the Musical Director, outdid himself. Nicole Bilbao choreographed her large cast well.
