For Mets Fans, It’s Apocalypse Now

The 2009 World Series. To Mets fans like me and you, tis the sound of sorrow. I mean honestly, could there have been a more morose ending to the 2009 MLB season than the cataclysmic scenario of a Phillies-Yankees World Series? *Sighs* Well I’m sure I’m not the only Mets fan who has been asked the dreadful question today, "Which team are you rooting for?" It’s a fairly difficult question. If just one of these foes was in, I’d unquestionably root for their adversary, ignoring all of that "Root for the New York team" or "Root for the NL" protocol, which is stupid to begin with. Bet the Yankee and the Phillie fans weren’t pulling for us in the ’06 NLCS! Wow, the Phillies vs. the Yankees in the World Series. You’ve got to be joking. Egh. Let’s run down the reasons there are to either root for the Phillies or root for the Yankees, from my dejected Mets fan point of view

For starters, I deal with New York Yankee fans virtually every day of my life. And as a Mets fan, the Yankee fans are constantly ridiculing me with their typical "26 titles to 2 titles" argument. All I need is for the Yankee universe to tack on another digit to their already stout championship total, thus furthering their banter. I personally never have to deal with the notoriously cocky and overconfident Philadelphians, so if the Phils wind up winning it all, at least there won’t be anyone to pester me about it here in the Empire State. Maybe the Phillies should win, considering their fairly unimpressive team history. They’ve been around for over a century and only have a total of 2 World Series championships! That’s easy to mock, and at the same time is very catchable! Even if they capture their 3rd championship this year, the Mets can totally catch up with them, whereas with the Yankees, we need all the help we can get! Then again, the Mets odds of catching the Yankees 26 titles is more or less microscopic, a lost cause if you will. What’s one more title?

Now aside from the 2000 World Series and some regular season humiliations scattered over the years, the Yankees haven’t done all that much to, shall we say, "break the Mets hearts." The Phillies on the other hand, have broken our hearts immensely over the past 3 years, stealing our division title/playoff ticket in ’07 and ’08, and then being brash idiots afterwards! Remember Jimmy Rollins whole spiel during the Phillies 2008 World Series celebration, over how the Mets "…forgot that it takes more than one player to bring home a championship." How about the Phillies hanging a picture of Jose Reyes rounding the bases with his forefinger in the air in Shane Victorino’s locker during last year’s postseason, with Victorino’s last name above the image because the Flyin’ Hawaiian made a similar gesture after a home run. I mean, are you kidding? Our season was long over, and the Phillies still feel the need to bash the Mets? Even if it’s at the hands of the Yankees, a nice World Series failure would be a lovely thing for the Phillies to experience. On the other hand though, this Mets-Yankees rivalry is something that has zero chance of ever fizzling out and vanishing. You know what they say in the westerns, "This town aint big enough for the both of us." The Mets-Yankees rivalry has been around since the Mets were created back in 1962. How long has the Mets-Phillies rivalry really been a hot item? 3 years? Maybe 4 or 5? It would be ultra sweet to gloat at the Yankee fans who for years have constantly berated us due to their abundance of World Series titles, even if it is at the hands of the arrogant Phillies.

But whatever. No matter who exits the 2009 World Series hoisting the Commissioner’s Trophy, there’s only one thing guaranteed for us Mets fans. And that thing is, it’s all a Catch-22. If the hated Yankees lose, the hated Phillies win. If the hated Phillies lose, the hated Yankees win. Whatever the outcome is, it’ll be negative, one way or the other. I just want this disaster to end, and focus on the upcoming offseason. As the cold winter days pass on, we’ll get over this and put it all behind us, and look forward to what hopefully will be a prosperous, successful, winning 2010 New York Mets season.

What’s on your minds my friends? Will you be pulling for the Phillies, or rooting for the Yankees? Or, are you like me, and are indifferent and apathetic towards this year’s World Series winner? Will you be watching at all? Comment below my fellow readers, and as always, thanks for stopping by to read!
