JAMS Festival plays to thrilled throngs

Despite the rains, the 12th Annual Jamaica Arts and Music Summer (JAMS) Festival hit the streets of downtown Jamaica on Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1

“JAMS is a great event that connects the business community, to area residents, to the artistic and creative community that are in and around Jamaica,” said Councilmember Leroy Comrie, who represents the area.

Two sound stages at the festival provided live entertainment, including performances by famous R&B, reggae and jazz musicians and emerging local artists. JAMS also featured dance groups and spoken-word performances. “It [the festival] gives people the opportunity to be touched by my work,” said Sir Shadow, whose artwork was on display at the Capital One Bank on Jamaica Avenue. “I feel honored to put positive energy into their lives.”

The JAMS festival boasted several “specialty blocks,” including the “Just for Kids” block, which offered free rides, popcorn, clowns and face painters.

This year the block had a basketball clinic for children (ages 8-14) hosted by former NBA All Star Jayson Williams.
