Local Food and Recycling at Sunset Park Greenmarket
Food Scrap Composting and Textile Recycling at Farmers Market Opening June 21

A weekly farmers market hosted by the nonprofit GrowNYC boasts a bounty of fresh regional produce, textile recycling and food scrap composting.

Sunset Park Greenmarket has accepted food scraps since 2012, in partnership with the NYC Department of Sanitation. Last year residents dropped 14,125 pounds of vegetable scraps, stale bread and coffee grounds which were later transformed into compost for local farming and gardening projects.

Textiles such as clothing, shoes and towels will also be collected this year. Materials will be sorted for reuse or recycled into new products such as wiping rags and insulation.

GrowNYC has collected more than 2.7 million pounds of textiles and 2.85 million pounds of food scraps at dozens of Greenmarket collection sites throughout the city, including Jackson Heights and Sunnyside. Together, food scraps and textiles comprise 23% of NYX’s waste, making efforts like these critical to reducing the big apple’s environmental footprint.

The Sunset Park Greenmarket takes place Saturday, June 21 – November 22 on 4th Avenue between 59th & 60th Streets. Food scraps and textiles are collected from 8am-1pm. For more information, visit www.grownyc.org or call 212-788-7964.
