Tablao Flamenco in Astoria - 2013 Spring Season Finale
Treat Dad to a night in Sevilla, without the hassle of the airport.
Just in time for Father’s Day, American Bolero Dance Company will present the sensational 2013 Spring Season Finale of its Tablao Flamenco production at The Chian Federation in Astoria on Friday, June 14th at 8:30 PM. Tablao Flamenco is an ongoing series of once-a-month showcases featuring live Flamenco and other styles of Spanish dance and music. Presented in a cabaret-type format and atmosphere, where guests can enjoy food and drinks while being entertained by some of the finest local and international talent in the industry, Tablao Flamenco recreates the experience of being in a flamenco club (or “tablao”) in Spain for the delight of local audiences.
The final performance of this Spring season features special guest JUAN SIDDI, a young, powerful and passionate flamenco dancer, who is the Artistic Director and Founder of the Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre Company in Santa Fe, NM. Mr. Siddi began performing in tablaos flamencos at the age of 15, and by the time he was 18, he was touring with professional dance companies and productions. He has enjoyed a spectacular worldwide career, performing all over Europe, including at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla and for His Majesty Juan Carlos of Spain, in the Middle East, and throughout the United States, where he has been an invited artist in the companies of Maria Benitez and La Tania. In 2011, he was also honored with the Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for Artistic Excellence. This will be his fifth appearance with American Bolero Dance Company.
Mr. Siddi joins a phenomenal cast of renowned artists from the New York City flamenco community. They include dancers GABRIELA GRANADOS and SOL “LA ARGENTINITA” and LILIANA MORALES, singers ALFONSO CID and AURORA REYES, guitarists RAPHAEL BRUNN and CRISTIAN PUIG. The BALLET ESPAÑOL de GABRIELA GRANADOS will also debut a stylish classical Spanish group choreography set to Ravel’s Bolero.
Established in 2008 by Gabriela Granados, the Artistic Director and Founder of American Bolero Dance Company, Tablao Flamenco has become a steady cultural fixture in the borough of Queens. Her company’s mission is to present performances in the United States that accurately represent the music, history and the traditional dances of Spain and Latin America. Guided by this mission, and drawing upon both her extensive training in Classical and Regional Spanish dances, Escuela Bolera, and Flamenco, and years of experience performing in three of Madrid’s most legendary tablaos flamencos (Los Canasteros, Zambra and Las Brujas), Ms. Granados created this unique series that brings the artistry and excitement of Flamenco and Spanish dance, along world-class entertainers, right to the heart of Astoria on a regular basis. The New York Times has called Ms. Granados’ programs “exuberant and stylish” and her solo work “stunning…a tour de force”. Tablao Flamenco has been hailed as a “dazzling spectacle”, “incredibly intense”, and “artfully performed”.
Tablao Flamenco is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council. This program is also made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts, with funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and with support from The JP Morgan Chase Foundation.
