Charisa, The Violin Diva

Charisa, the Violin Diva began her musical journey in a small public school program at the tender age of four, and so began a lifelong love-affair with music. Born andraised inMaryland, all of her earliest musical influences - from traditional gospel to Washington DC’s gogo; and from swinging jazz to the music of a classical symphony, all intermixing to create an innovative and jazz-infused take on contemporary soul. Charisa has collaborated with some of the most illustrious artists across the musical borders, including Wynton Marsalis, Savion Glover, Musiq SoulChild, Common, Diana Krall, Terence Blanchard and Mos Def, to name a few. And in the summer of 2011, Charisa won grand prizes in both McDonald’s Gospelfest Competition in Newark and West Oak Lane Jazz Festival Competition in Philadelphia, in front of 10,000 people.

After receiving her Master’s Degree cum laude from Rutgers in 2007, she began two regular urban strings classes in the Bronx and Harlem which she maintains today, teaching the children of New York City a classical foundation augmented with hip hop and jazz. This work has lead to the development of her new curriculum, from which she regularly teaches workshops and seminars.

Charisa’s first two albums ‘the Soul Evolution of Charisa’ in the soul genre and ‘This Journey Home’ in the gospel genre are both set to release in early 2012. Join her and her funky band for an evening of Jazz and R&B! and Special guest poet:
