An off-duty police officer was shot Sunday night in Jamaica after intervening in a domestic violence dispute.
NYPD Officer Joseph Koch, who is assigned to the 101st Precinct, was leaving a party around 10:00 p.m., when he saw an 11-year-old boy run out of a house on South Road near Inwood Street, shouting that his mother was being assaulted inside, said police.
Koch entered the home, with his gun drawn, and was allegedly attacked by 40-year-old Jose Bernazard.
The two struggled for the officer’s weapon, and three shots were fired. Koch was shot once in the left hand, and Bernazard was shot once in the lower abdomen. The third shot did not strike anyone.
Koch and Bernazard were taken to Jamaica Hospital, where they remain in stable condition, said police.
The domestic violence victim who was injured during the initial dispute was also taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition, where she was treated for a laceration to her head.
Bernazard has been charged with assault, criminal contempt, aggravated harassment, burglary, endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest, police said Monday afternoon.
