Not in this Office you Don’t!

OK, you graduated from college and are now ready to set the business world on fire. Well, perhaps, but you have to dress the part and that means not blindly following every fashion trend. Such as: The Military Look! Have you noticed that designers are trying to put women in military uniforms? Periodically, designers lose their collective minds searching for a way to look different, just for the sake of being different so women will buy clothes. This seems to be one of those times. And many women, like lemmings following each other into the sea, will dutifully look like they wandered out of Fort Dix.

Well, forget about going to an office dressed like that. Besides, what thinking woman would possibly want to look like a soldier? What man would want to be with a woman who looks like a soldier?

I see utility jackets, cargo pants, camouflage, army caps, all in olive drab, one of the most unflattering colors imaginable. From what I’ve read, designers claim (they need to come up with some reason) that women are fighting for health care, the recession and free-floating angst and, consequently, the military look fits right in. To which I answer, “huh?” I fail to see why being for or against Obama’s health plan should make us want to look like a soldier. What do they intend to give us to complete the look, a toy gun with a miniature bayonet?

Soldiers dress this way to blend in with their surroundings. Since when do women want to blend in and not stand out? Even in an office I would certainly want to stand out and be noticed—in a tasteful way, of course. I wouldn’t be wearing olive drab or any part of the military look. I also read where designers are touting the look as classic so it’s investment dressing.

What nonsense. Even the women crazy enough to buy into the trend, will become thoroughly disillusioned and soon crave color and style. You certainly won’t go far in an office looking like a soldier gone AWOL. But I fear some women will march into an office. And you, looking tastefully businesslike, will get the promotion.
