Alec Hirschfeld

Five Towns College in Dix Hills, Long Island welcomes Alec Hirschfeld to the Film Department. Hirschfeld is teaching Intermediate Cinematography this fall and Advanced Cinematography for the spring semester.

He began a 40 year career in filmmaking after graduating from NYU School of the Arts in 1971 with a BFA in film production. This led him to a 30 year process that followed the course of apprenticeship from camera assistant, to camera operator and eventually to director of photography.

He is credited as Director of Photography on a number of feature films and TV shows, and also served as 2nd Unit Director on many of those shows. His three film series “Out Here in the Fields” was selected for screening at over 20 film festivals around the country. He has been associated with four films that have been included in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress: “Mean Streets,” “Taxi Driver,” “Terminator,” and one of only two student films in the registry, “No Lies.” Hirschfeld is a member of the National Executive Board of the Cinematographers Guild and also a member of the Directors Guild of America.

Five Towns College offers students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (B.F.A.) in film/video. Students are immediately provided access to the college’s state-of-the-art equipment accessible in the first year of study. The hands-on skills and experiences our students learn provide them with the knowledge to pursue careers as directors, cinematographers, camera operators, editors, film/video production managers, lighting technicians, or any other professionals in the field of film and television.
