A dolphin that washed up on the shores of Rockaway earlier this morning died after attempts to keep it alive, according to The New York Times.
The dolphin was discovered at 9:30 a.m. at Beach 19th Street, said a police spokesperson. The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit and Harbor Patrol responded to the scene. The Riverhead Foundation for Marine research and Preservation also reported to Rockaway and transported the beached dolphin to an aquarium in Long Island, the organization said in a Facebook post. They described the five foot long common dolphin as emaciated.
According to the Times, the dolphin was still alive when it reached Riverhead, but died around 3:15 p.m.
