Jeffrey Halperin received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) in1979 and completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship in Psychopharmacology at Schering – Plough Pharmaceutical Corporation in 1980.  After serving as a Research Associate at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons for three years, he accepted a faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he served as the Director of Child Psychology from 1984 – 1989.  While maintaining a part-time affiliation with Mount Sinai, in 1989 Dr. Halperin accepted a full-time position in the Department of Psychology at Queens College.  Currently, he is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Queens College and the Graduate Center of CUNY, and is a full-time member of the Neuropsychology Doctoral faculty.  

For the past three decades Professor Halperin has been conducting cutting-edge neuroscientific research focusing on neuropsychiatric disorders that emerge during childhood and often persist throughout the lifespan.  Through the integration of clinical, neuropsychological and neurobiological approaches within the context of longitudinal designs that follow children over many years, he has been elucidating the factors that influence the behavioral trajectories and psychiatric outcomes of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and related behavioral problems.  He has examined an array of family and environmental factors that influence outcome, and has employed neuroimaging procedures to examine differences in brain function between children whose symptoms and maladaptive behaviors do and do not persist into adulthood.  Most recently, he has been working on the development of novel non-medication interventions for preschool children at risk for developing ADHD with the hope of preventing or diminishing the severity of later behavioral and cognitive difficulties. 

Within the context of his research program, Professor Halperin and his team have provided high-quality psychological services to hundreds of children throughout Queens and the New York Metropolitan area at no cost to the families.  Further, he continually volunteers his time to offer workshops to parents, teachers, school administrators and school psychologists throughout the borough and the surrounding areas. On a more national and international level, he has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals that focus on children’s mental health, is a member of the Child Psychopathology and Developmental Disabilities Study Section of the National Institutes of Health, and serves as a frequent referee for academic and funding agencies around the world.

Throughout his professional career Jeffrey Halperin has served as a teacher, clinician and researcher.  He has mentored more than 25 students through the completion of their doctorates in Psychology, has published well over 100 articles in peer reviewed scientific journals, and has had his research consistently supported by the National Institutes of Health for more than 20 years.
