For years the Seville Diner on Northern Boulevards in Douglaston was a local treasure and go-to-place any day or night. But it closed several years ago and no one has made a success of the location – until now. Mizumi offers buffet style Asian fusion cuisine.
The totally remodeled location was created by a renowned restaurant designer hired by owners Edward and wife Marianne Chiang. They chose warm colors and separate dining areas to allow for an intimate dinner or select the larger space for a private party. Sparing no expense, they have brought in a world-class chef, Jeffrey Moon, who comes from Manhattan where he worked at the famous Tao. Here he said, “I’m delighted to bring a menu of Asian fusion, taking the best of ideas from the Japanese, Thai, Chinese and Korean cuisines. Bringing them together allows me to be innovative and creative.”
He has lots of counter space to bring us many dishes from each region.
I rarely visit a buffet restaurant because I never know how long the food has been sitting on the steam tables. But here, with their success and busy dining room, the biggest challenge the chef has is keeping the many platters full. I saw they had brought out a platter overflowing with crab claws. It looked so inviting that I went to my table to get my camera and take a photo of the display. But by the time I got back to the buffet, half of the crabs were gone!
We began our feast with the sushi and sashimi table. There must be dozens of choices. My favorite was a spicy tuna roll topped with caviar. There were two chefs constantly creating more sushi and willing to take requests from the diners. As we walked further and turned the corner we found three choices of soup. Here there were also multiple salads, from Caesar to string bean to edamame. As I walked further down the buffet table I found a variety of fried fish and chicken. My favorite was the crispy whole fried fish, moist inside and crunchy on the outside. My husband enjoyed the oysters and clams. Fortunately we were a party of six so we each tried tasting different dishes. None disappointed us. The final pièce de résistance was the seemingly endless dessert choices.
