COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: For the past few years, Howard Beach resident Sharon DeVito, 31, has been fighting back against cancer – a disease that has taken the lives of several members of her family. DeVito has participated in the Howard Beach Relay for Life event, which helps support the American Cancer Society (ACS). In addition, she has organized many bake sales and fundraisers like bowling and dart tournaments to raise money and awareness for the disease. Along with her husband and son, DeVito has raised thousands of dollars for the ACS. “Everyone can spare a little bit of time and help out,” said DeVito.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: “My biggest challenge was making the decision to change the direction of life and quit smoking,” said DeVito. She said the death of her family members to cancer and her son’s concern about her health made her decide to quit smoking. “It took a while, but I quit three years ago,” said DeVito.

INSPIRATION: DeVito said her inspiration comes from her son who helps his mother with the bake sales and fundraisers. “He is absolutely kind and sweet and already does a lot to help out and give back to the society,” said, DeVito. She wants to see Frankie grow up, and she hopes he keeps his community spirit and continues giving back to those around him.
