Name: Rick Lazio
Age: 52
Party Affiliation: Republican
Occupation: Former U.S. Congressman
Decision To Run: First and foremost, I’m running to break this state out of the cycle of corruption and inaction that has marked the last four years of single-party rule in Andrew Cuomo’s Albany. The path New York is currently on is unsustainable, with runaway taxes and spending driving jobs away in record numbers. Things are only getting worse, and if we’re going to turn this state around we need sweeping change starting from the top. The experience I have had in both public and private sector show that I can work within the system to change it.
Major Issues: We need to slash taxes, and we need to bring new jobs to New York. Economic opportunities are shriveling up in New York because of a liberal state government that has driven job creators out of our communities. Businesses that should be in our state have moved to greener fiscal pastures in places like Connecticut and South Carolina – states that have competitive tax rates and a less cumbersome regulatory bureaucracy. If we’re going to make New Yorkers prosperous, we need to have a system in place that would make businesses actually want to move here.
Top Priorities: I would work to bring the jobs back as an Ambassador for our state. I would create jobs in the near term by investing in infrastructure to fix our roads in bridges. In the long term, I would implement an aggressive strategy to bring well-paying jobs to our state. I’ll make it easier to start a new business, and I’ll use the executive branch to actively recruit business from around the country. We will create a climate in which businesses expand and jobs grow, and in doing so make New York great again.
