Why did you decide to run for City Council: Sander cites his success as a City Councilmember as his reason for running once again. “My team and I have done an amazing job while we’ve been up at bat for our community, but the job is not finished,” said Sanders. “We’ve brought in a lot of resources, and with those resources we’ve helped the community in many ways. We’ve rebuilt every library in our district, and we’ve done a lot for the schools, but like I said the job is not done.
What are two major issues affecting your community: “Two major issues affecting my community are unemployment and the current state of our educational system,” remarked Sanders. “New York City on a whole has a very high unemployment rate, and the unemployment rate of black men is incredibly high, much higher than the average rate and much higher than it should be. Since my district is 75 percent black, this is a vital issue to me. I plan to tackle it by creating career training opportunities to help get the people in my community on their feet. In reference to our educational system, the biggest problem in our district is that our children have to compete with children all over the world; meanwhile they are working with outdated equipment. I plan to update the schools in my district and give the schools state-of-the-art facilities to give our young scholars the tools they need to thrive.”
What is the first thing you would focus on if elected: “The first thing I would focus on would be jobs, and doing all that I can to stabilize the economic state of my district,” Sanders said. “If people lose their jobs, they can lose their self respect, families, and it really becomes a total loss. This can’t happen.”
