Whitestone revealed

The Bayside Historical Society (BHS) is hosting a presentation and book signing by Jason Antos, author of “Whitestone,” part of Arcadia Publishing’s “Images of America series.”

In addition to Antos’ Power Point presentation, display of historically significant items and autographing of his 2006 book, there will be a special a cappella performance by students from the Bayside High School Academy of Music.

The event will take place on Tuesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the BHS headquarters in “the Castle” on Totten Road in Fort Totten, Bayside, a short distance from the front gate and accessible by Q13 and Q16 bus.

Light refreshments will be served and reservations are necessary. Admission is free for BHS members; a $3 donation is suggested for others.

Good deals, good health

P.S. 21 the Edward Hart School in Flushing is hosting a two-in-one event that can make your life a little better.

On Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the school, 147-36 26th Avenue (across from Memorial Field) in Flushing will have a “Keeping the Family Healthy and Safe” fair sponsored by the NYPD New Immigrant Outreach Unit, and the school’s “Dollar Day Sale.”

The fair will feature free health screenings by New York Hospital Queens; NYPD fingerprinting for children; free advice from Queens Legal Services, light bulbs from Con Edison; kids’ giveaways from Health Plus and much more.

Plan ahead

Flushing Assemblymember Grace Meng, an attorney who sits on the Assembly Aging Committee, is collaborating with City University of New York (CUNY) Law School hold free Flushing Estate Planning Clinics in her downtown Flushing district office.

The clinics will provide free legal service in drafting wills, health care proxies, powers of attorney, and living wills for Flushing residents and Meng’s constituents from the 22nd Assembly District.

Co-presented by Common Law, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides free legal services to low-income New Yorkers, the clinics will be on Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Meng’s District Office, 136-20 38th Avenue, Suite 10A.

Cell antenna, Fairway hearings

The New York City Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA) is empowered to interpret the Zoning Resolution, Building and Fire Codes, Multiple Dwelling Law and Labor Law.

BSA hearings are held in their offices on the 9th floor of 40 Rector Street in Manhattan and are open to the public. The public hearings are usually on Tuesdays, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, April 28, the BSA will conduct hearings on two matters of interest to many people living in Community Board 11.

Application 20-09 BZ concerns an application for another set of cellphone antennas at 54-49 Little Neck Parkway.

Application 259-08BZ involves a variance requested by Fairway Supermarkets at the Douglaston Plaza shopping mall. It will be heard at 1:30 p.m. and transportation may be provided by the applicant, according to CB11.

Trip the light fantastic

Ballroom dance vlasses are being taught by Victor Chiang at the Poppenhusen Institute in College Point, on Saturdays at 11 a.m. from April 18 through June 20.

According to the Institute, located at 114-04 14th Road, the focus for the first few weeks of the course will be the Waltz.

Free computer classes

The Samuel Field Y in Little Neck is offering a 10-week, twice-weekly course for those who already have a basic knowledge of computers and wish to develop their skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Ozanam Gala benefit

The 12th Annual Rose of Carmel Benefit Gala for the Ozanam Geriatric Foundation is being held this year at Russo’s on the Bay, at 162-45 Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach.

Festivities begin with cocktails at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5 and honors Jerry Spampanato, General Manager of JFK Airport with the 2009 Rose of Carmel Award. Also honored will be Carmelite Sister M. Philip Ann Bowden, former administrator of Ozanam Hall, as recipient of the 2009 Frederick Ozanam Award.

Tickets are $300 each, all but $80 of which is tax deductible. Contributions, including of items to be auctioned at the Gala, are being accepted.
