Memories of Queens
If you were born or lived in Queens, especially Bayside, years ago, here’s a chance to reminisce and chat with compatriots.
On Thursday, August 6 at 6:30 p.m. the Windsor Park Library, 79-50 Bell Boulevard (at Union Turnpike) is holding “Memories of Queens,” with special guest Margaret Gruen, who grew up in Bell Park Gardens in the 50s.
Visitors are welcome to bring photos, poems and stories, or just stop by to listen.
Witness communication
The Single Parent Center of the Samuel Field Y, located at 58-20 Little Neck Parkway in Little Neck continues its discussion group, “Wednesday Nite Rap” for 40+ singles.
On Wednesday, August 12, at 7:30 p.m., Phyllis Bohrer, a licensed, certified social worker and psychotherapist, will discuss “The Art of Communicating Effectively.”
On Wednesday, August 19, also at 7:30 p.m., author, lecturer and humorist Irwin Pheffer returns to host a discussion drawn from the movie “Witness,” asking the question, “Can Opposites Overcome Their Differences?”
The fee to attend is $7 per session.
Cattle call
The Minstrel Players will be holding auditions for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Hound of the Baskervilles” at Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 Main Street, Northport Village on Monday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m. The part of Sherlock Holmes is already cast.
Male parts available are: Dr. Watson (40’s); Sir Henry (30’s); Barrymore the Butler (50 to 70); Jack Stapleton (20’s to 30s); Selden, a Convict (a non-speaking cameo, any age).
Female parts available are: Lady Agatha Mortimer (40’s to 60’s); Perkins the Maid (any age); Mrs. Barrymore the Housekeeper (50 to 70); Kathy Stapleton (20’s to 30’s); Laura Lyons (20 to 30).
British accent is required for all speaking parts. Rehearsals begin on Monday, September 14. Performances dates are November 7 through 15. Please bring a resume and a headshot.

Flushing Library loves Opera
In celebration of Lincoln Center’s 50th anniversary, Queens Library’s Flushing Branch will host Baritone Markus Beam and Soprano Rachele Gilmore in the program “In Love with Opera.”
Under the direction of maestro Doug Martin, the duo will demonstrate how a love story comes to life in an opera on Saturday, August 15, at the library, located at 41-17 Main Street near Kissena Boulevard.
The artists will rely on audience participation to fill out their “opera company.” The program, part of Lincoln Center’s “Meet the Artist” series, begins at 2 p.m.
