COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Abe Miller has served the Queens community for nearly 50 years, and his hard work and dedication to building up the Forest Hills Little League from scratch is why the Forest Hills Youth Athletic Association (FHYAA) named a clubhouse in his honor this past April 14. Miller coached a little league team for 50 years, taking them from park to park, before settling at Fleet Street in Forest Hills, where he helped build the park and clubhouse. Today, the little league is part of the larger FHYAA, which provides sports activities for youngsters in Forest Hills and its neighboring areas.

PERSONAL: A former electrical engineer and serviceman in the armed forces, Miller was raised in the Bronx, and currently resides in Rego Park. He and his family are sports fans, rooting for the New York Giants, New York Rangers, and most of all, the New York Yankees. However, he said he has a soft spot for the Mets, who provided the financial aid to get the Forest Hills Little League a home.

JOB: Miller has retired from coaching and is currently District Administrator of District 26, serving little leaguers throughout North Queens (Bayside, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, College Point, Little Neck, Douglaston, Glen Oaks).

PROUDEST MOMENT: The births of his two children, Mark and Fran. Miller’s coaching career began when his son’s little league team needed a coach.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: The 85-year-old Miller’s biggest challenges now are his and his wife’s health; it is a struggle to stay healthy and be active.

INSPIRATION: Miller’s wife Roslyn, above all, is his inspiration. “She’s always there,” said Miller, and she certainly has been: she stood by his side for the entirety of his 50-year coaching career. They currently await their reunion after Roslyn’s recovery from surgery.
