Community Board 11, Health Committee Co-chair
Bayside Hills

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Eileen Miller was elected co-chair of the Health Committee for Community Board 11 earlier this year, and actively looks for ways to improve the health of and hospital conditions for residents of Queens. Most recently, she has been attending meetings and reporting to the Community Board about the outbreak of an antibiotic-resistant strain of staphylococcus.
Miller is also a member of numerous community and nursing organizations, including the New York State Nursing Association, the Community Alliance to Retain Equitable Services and the Board of Directors of the Bayside Hills Civic Association.

PERSONAL: A lifelong resident of Queens, Miller currently resides in Bayside Hills, with husband Allan, who is a vice president of Varsity Tours Bus Company, and daughter Kimberly, who is working toward her Master’s degree in nursing at Adelphi University.

JOB: Miller is a full-time registered nurse. For over 30 years, she has worked at hospitals all over Queens, and is currently with the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, where she provides services for the sick and elderly. She said, “It’s a good feeling when you’re able to say ‘I make a living by making a difference in other people’s lives.’”

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: “Balancing the commitment to my patients, time with my family and school is probably the most difficult aspect of my life,” said Miller, who is also a third-year Master’s student in nursing at Adelphi University.

PROUDEST MOMENT: Though she takes the most joy in helping people every day with their healthcare needs, Miller recalls the period during which her daughter Kimberly earned her Bachelor’s degree from Queens College and was accepted into the graduate nursing program at Adelphi. “It told me I did a good job in raising a wonderful woman who, like her mother, wants to ensure the welfare of the community.”

INSPIRATION: Miller attributes her multi-tasking skills to her mother, who split her time between a full-time job and raising seven children. “She taught me so much about raising a family and what a responsibility it is,” she said. “So I try to help everyone I can, but I also try to stay as close as possible to my family.”
