Theft Of Reliquary
Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with the robbery of a silver reliquary from St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Astoria.
Church officials noticed the reliquary - a shoebox size item engraved with images of St. Demetrios - missing on Wednesday, June 27 and called the police, who later arrested 37-year-old Georgiou Kostas of Astoria and 61-year-old John Angelis of Brooklyn.
According to the complaint filed by Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, Kostas broke into the church and stole the reliquary - which supposedly contains a bone from the actual saint. He then allegedly went to a local pawnshop and hocked the item. Angelis allegedly offered Kostas more money than he had received for the reliquary, so the pair returned to the shop and reclaimed the item, according to the complaint.
Kostas was arraigned on charges of grand larceny and criminal possession of a stolen item, and Angelis was charged with criminal possession. The reliquary was recovered. Kostas and Angelis are scheduled to appear next before the court on Wednesday, June 11 and Thursday, June 12 respectively.

Shops Offer Kids Activities
The Shops of Atlas Park in Glendale will host activities for kids during three weekday mornings this summer.
Every Tuesday and Wednesday through August 29, kids can get in free to family films shown at The Shops by bringing their library card or signing up for library service. This opportunity is through the Regal Free Family Film Festival, and the movie screenings, which include Monster House and Nanny McPhee, will start at 10 a.m. each day.
In addition, children’s activities like puppet shows, along with arts and crafts will be available, and organizers anticipate a big turnout, so they recommend that anyone wishing to attend get there early.
Every Thursday through July 26, children can participate in a scavenger hunt, which will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. After picking up a questionnaire at The Shops’ Hospitality Center, kids can answer 10 questions related to the shopping center to win prizes like kaleidoscopes and beach balls.

KIDPOWER Conference
Twenty-two parents, educators, social workers, counselors, health and safety professionals and social justice activists came to the Kew Forest School recently to participate in the KIDPOWER International Conference for Caring Adults.
The conference included workshops and discussions to teach those in attendance the KIDPOWER method of bringing personal safety skills to young people.
Kew Forest Headmaster Dr. Peter Lewis has been a board member of KIDPOWER since 1990 and was very proud to host the conference.
“Our desire in bringing the conference to New York City was to expose as many people as possible to techniques of child safety and child empowerment that KIDPOWER teaches, which are not as prevalent as they should be,” Dr. Lewis said. “We hope that by launching the conference here, we can set a model for other educators to teach these techniques to their students.”
